I saw the Tweet from Mark Punter a couple of days ago, courtesy of Nicky Horne. Sheer panic from the BBC, I suspect. I blathered on about R1 getting all those extra channels a while back on here somewhere, for an audience who neither pay the licence fee, or listen to R1 for their type of er, music.
Anyway, I wish Mr Punter well, but I can't help thinking that a vast majority of ex-listeners won't be tempted back to hear a load of old programmes. The BBC under Davie, have messed up most radio. Local radio, R2 and 6Music, where the best DJ's they have, Marc Riley and Gideon Coe, have been shunted from their usual programmes - especially Marc, to make way for lesser presenters and music, while ensuring that their figures dive even further. Absolutely clueless.

Wasn't this what we all used to bleat on for back in the day on the old BBC R2 boards???
Just think if they had listened there would have been far less hassle!

On the basis that this would be sensible, I would not expect it to happen.
It would not be consistent with the Audience Alienation scheme.
Also, it might be seen as too much of an admission of failure?
I think we are still to see the full impact of recent changes on the listening figures.
I am still not sure what anyone over 50 is supposed to listen to? |

Well it's happening. A R2 spin-off station. Seeing that my old Roberts in the kitchen can no longer play Boom, then this will be a welcome addition. That said, I've enjoyed listening 6 Music again and more Jazz FM as well as good old Five Live, with a little Ken Bruce and Simon Mayo on the side.

Your guess is as good as mine, H. Looks like they'll have a fight on their hands with the commercial stations, who rightly want to protect what they have without the Beeb trying to walk all over them. So it could be a while, if ever!

How irritating that the Beeb think that they can just move in and out of this territory on a whim.
They have spent the last few years being persistently, arrogantly dismissive of the need to cater for certain listeners, leaving a vacuum to be filled by the commercial stations...... now they think they can just wander back in. |

Yep. How many excellent regional presenters could be paid for with the cost of a Radio 3 digital station? It's just very poor planning, and a sudden panic because they've lost market share (which everyone predicted). |

That's had more effect than anything else, from what I've seen. Especially with the horrendous weather that's plagued us for ages. But also with people who rely on familiar voices for company. Then there's all the cost cutting with BBC News, Newsnight, etc etc.
BBC management (there's a misnomer if ever I saw one) aren't fit to run a hot dog van.
Far too many expensive cowboys and nowhere near enough indians.

I'm the same Becky.
If I remember correctly we were all asking for this kind of station at least 15+ years ago back on the Radio 2 message boards. If they think we'll all come running back to them now we've found other stations to listen to they can think again, as much as I miss ad free stations.
As you say Raver I wonder if it will ever happen....

I used to turn off stations that did adverts,Helen, (they really annoyed me) but when the stations that are ad free aren't giving you the programmes you want it becomes a natural thing. They don't bother me at all now. |

I'm used to them now Becky but I'd prefer not to have them. I know you can pay to go 'ad free' on some stations but I feel that it defeats the object and can't imagine how the show would sound if they put in another track instead of the ad!

Mine as well Angela! Don't know if you heard Rob Jones this morning, he read a letter from today's Telegraph saying pretty much the same thing.

I was thinking that myself Helen. I seem to remeber someone who was always on about another station.
I wonder if they will try to tempt Ken back As much as I like him he doesn't seem quite right on Commercial radio.

I don't think they'll get Ken back. If anything, these stations could be designed to make sure more presenters (eg Steve Wright) don't leave |
