Love her music,loved this programme..

Michael Ball is joined by the legendary singer-songwriter, Carole King, for an in-depth conversation reflecting her life in music. Carole reflects on her early years as a struggling songwriter and her eventual breakthrough with songwriting partner, Gerry Goffin. Working together in the legendary Brill Building, they would go on to create some of the biggest and most iconic hit songs of the 1960s. The catalyst for this process was the friendly rivalry of fellow songwriting duo, Barry Mann and Cynthia Weill.
Carole recalls the phenomenal success of her landmark album, 'Tapestry', and how she reluctantly became a solo performing artist under the global spotlight. She explains to Michael how she dealt with fame and the rollercoaster journey which followed, a story now told in the musical based on these events, 'Beautiful'.
As a fellow performer and lifelong fan of this incredible artist, Michael gets to the heart of her music and explores the feeling behind the lyrics. This is Carole King up close and personal and, at times, emotional, telling the story of her life in song.

What a lovely two hours of loveliness that was. Carole comes across as such a modest and down to earth person. And what a talent. I won't go on (much), but in all my days, I had no idea she was responsible for this....

I'm Into Something Good

and only a few years ago, I discovered the original....Garrypenny posted iot up on the much lamented R2 boards.

The Cookies

I love it...but the Herman's Hermits cover will always send me into rapture.

Wasn't it a great programme. Did either of you see the Tapestry concert from Hyde Park last year I think it went out on Sky Arts and has been repeated. That was one of the albums of my life!

They wrote some fantastic songs didn't they! I love the Cookies version of Chains, often played on SOTS in the past.

I wonder how many people know that this is a Goffin / King track. Sadly there isn't a 'music played' list for that show. I didn't hear it all, but I wonder if this Byrds cover of 'Wasn't Born To Follow' was featured. It's short, sweet & wonderfully psychadelic. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3hEfcawx6Fc

Raver
For the most part, back in the sixties, I thought British covers of American records were inferior but not in the case of I'm Into Something Good. The Brits came out on top with that one. Smile

Yes, the R2 board....still lamented.

Garrypenny....am I right in thinking he was a big Motown fan?

Helen

I didn't see the concert but my daughter was actually there...she loved it.

Last year the NME,in an attempt to explain Tapestry to its readers, described it as "Adele's 21 for your nan" Laughing

Oh Becky I'm so envious of your daughter!

That description of Tapestry is spot on. I'm annoyed with myself for getting rid of the vinyl copy I had when I bought it on CD.

I don't think the Byrds featured on the show Raver. I'm going to record it from iPlayer as it's one you could listen to years from now and it still would be good.

Please Miss...it wasn't me. It was His Lordship!

I too am envious of your daughter, Becky. I was sorely tempted to go- I've been to a fair few of the Hyde Park summer concerts over the past years, but I've grown tired of people trying to edge past me with armfuls of beers, pretending that they already have a pitch, then settling only a few feet from me, thus making a crowded spot even worse. And growling and denying others that try it on afterwards. Add to that, people holding phones up all of the time and spoiling your view, and it gets a bit tiring. The last one I went to, was The Stones...I thought I can't ever beat this, so haven't been to one since. On that particular night, I held a bunch of Latin looking boys at bay, with menacing looks and growls...and an emphatic "NO!", when they tried to push past me. It was the Stones, after all.... Laughing

You know I realised that just as I posted and I thought I'd gone back and corrected it. Obviously not so sorry Raver. Embarassed
