How did I know you'd have jumped in first with a post, Mark!

Anyhow, this is - in my humble opinion - the best Bee Gees song ever recorded: http://youtu.be/zlWqNl4Yips

Yes, it is very sad news,Mark...I heard it on the radio late last night.

He had a long swan song after he was so near to death a few weeks ago.

They always seemed to be a close family and now poor Barry is left on his own now.

This song of theirs has always been a favourite of mine

R.I.P. Robin.

I got up late this morning and switched the radio on as usual for the Golden Hour only to hear a Bee Gees track and when that was followed by two more I figured that something had happened

Robin Gibb was a truly great writer and performer not least because of the real quality of his voice and it is often forgotten that the Bee Gees were the second ever most successful British songwriting team after Lennon and McCartney - and they wrote songs for a vast range of other artists from Diana Ross to Celine Dion

My favourite music from them was the late 60's/early 70's stuff and I recall as a teenager that one of my favourite ever tracks was Robin's solo single 'Saved By the Bell' - I have to admit I was never really a great fan of their late 70s disco period but certainly you have to give them credit for reinventing themselves for a whole new generation

Some of their 80s output and beyond in many ways was a partial recreation of those early hits which again changed their musical direction
but I have to be honest and say that I was a little surprised that in recent years Robin lowered himself to the level of becoming a judge on reality TV shows - I think from his record and superb reputation he was a lot better than that - and I certainly couldn't ever see the likes of Paul McCartney going down that road

Overall though I feel it's a very sad day and we have lost not just a great writer and performer but also one of music's greatest characters
and to employ a much overused phrase he really will be sadly missed but we do have all that wonderful music which will undoubtedly be a real lasting legacy Sad

Jeremy Vine did a nice tribute with Mike Read who was a good friend of Robins. So many legends have passed on recently.

He did, but I don't think he should have started with "Stayin' Alive"

Ruddles, I agree, the Bee Gees' best period for me was the late 60s. I remember Noel Gallagher saying a few years ago that their output from 1967-69 was as good as Sergeant Pepper. There were many classics like I Started A Joke, written by Robin.
Nice of SOTS to play Saved By The Bell today.

I've just returned from my usual Saturday night gig and am watching a very interesting documentary on the Bee Gees on BBC One

Might be worth catching up with it on I Player if you've missed it tonight Smile
