I was very sad today to hear the announcement of the death of the one and only Sid Waddell - the master of the inventive and always over embellished darts commentary
Even though he had been absent from our screens for many months he will be greatly missed by all fans of darts all over the world
A very nice and intelligent man who held a first class honours degree in English Literature his unique style employing his natural Geordie accent did such a lot to increase the popularity of the sport of darts and to turn it into one with a huge television audience
There are some commentators who will always be remembered as the voice of their respective sports such as Dan Maskell with Tennis, John Arlott with Cricket, Eddie Waring with Rugby League and Peter O'Sullivan with Horse Racing and certainly Sid comes into this rare category
As someone suggested today they should certainly rename one of the major darts tournaments in his honour as in my view probably he did more for the sport of darts than anyone else in history including Phil Taylor
A true character and legend and a very sad loss _________________ Are you ready for a Ruddles? |

I haven't watched darts for a while but when I did I always enjoyed Sid's commentary...he wrote Jossy's Giants, a children's footballing comedy/drama that was on the TV in the eighties.

I had to smile this evening when my elder son came in who is now a semi professional darts player and told me that he was inspired to get interested in darts because when he was about eight years old apparently after I had put him to bed he used to sneakily put the television back on when there were darts being shown because he loved Sid's commentaries - when he was young he used to call him Sidward because he thought his name was Sidward L - never having encountered anyone with that rather old fashioned name
Tonight he said 'Dad,it was all those years ago and I bet you never knew because I've never told you until now'
To that I responded 'Of course I knew - you can't fool someone whose been there and got the T Shirt because I used to do the same thing at that age listening to Radio Luxembourg on my transistor radio under the bedclothes and having to use some dreadful earpiece when my Dad came upstairs - and I bet he knew exactly what was going on _________________ Are you ready for a Ruddles? |

Very true Sid was the voice of darts and did a lot for the sport and i agree with having a trophy named after him _________________ I found out how you can hurt an insect. It's the bees knees |
