We've just booked to see this in November at the Menier Chocolate Factory in Southwark, London. It's a lovely little theatre seating about 300 and we always go for the "Meal Deal" as the food is so wonderful.
For this show the menu includes a course containing Brazil nuts  .

Isn't Jane Asher in that Eileen? Sounds like you'll have a wonderful evening.
I remember watching Danny La Rue in a TV production donkeys years ago.

Yes Helen, Jane Asher plays the aunt.
The daft plot, if anyone doesn't know, is about two undergraduates who want to entertain their girlfriends in their college rooms but have to have a chaperone (those were the days!) to avoid a scandal. Charley's aunt is due in from Brazil and will perform this task but when she is delayed another student is persuaded to impersonate her. To add to the complications, a couple of gentlemen of a certain age start to take a romantic interest in "her".
The tea party is going well but then the real aunt turns up ...
By the way, Helen, I don't know if you enjoyed the Danny la Rue version but in my opinion the play doesn't really work unless the aunt impersonator is obviously (in the eyes of the audience) a fellow. D la R always looked a bit too female for my taste. |

I went last night and haven't laughed so much in a theatre for ages. The play is brilliantly and tightly written and gallops along at a great pace. The performances were spot-on and Mathew Horne who played Lord Fancourt-Babberley (the pseudo aunt) was inspired. Jane Asher who played the genuine aunt was beautiful, poised and mischievous.
It's a shame the run at the Chocolate Factory ends on Saturday. It's going on to Bath next week with no hint of a tour so far, but I hope there is one as it is too good a production to be abandoned. |
