Well, I noticed a few more per day last week then on one day .... woosh... 292 messages in my junk box in Outlook. All very similar, as if from names in my own domain zfrtiteg...@ jabw....., already labelled as [SPAM] by my ISP or whoever.

Then this week been about 100 a day in junk box, 'apparently' from e-mail addresses like mine but with 2001, 2002, 2003... in front of them

And today 'apparently' I have 18 UPS parcels and 12 DHL parcels on the way..... :laughter3:

Have you recently subscribed to anything or bought from an internet site you haven't used before? Bloody annoying whatever the reason.

I have good reasons to curse Virgin every now and again but my email addresses with them have (touch wood, to date) not attracted junk or spam mail from anywhere.

Before I switched to them, must be ten years or more ago, I found that the addys which had my full Christian and surname in them did get a load of unwanted stuff, but it stopped when I changed them, one to just my initials and the other to a combination of mine and my wife's names.

John, I gets loads of emails on my business addresses that purport to be from......... me.

What happens is that a robot has accessed somebody's Outlook (it's nearly always crappy Outlook) address book via a trojan or whatever and then added those contacts to a spam list. Another mailbox then uses an acquired list to spam out stuff by the million. They're very clever, because they're now "intelligent" enough to make the email sources look legitimate - hence the apparently valid "from" addresses. If you look at the source code for the emails you'll see the actual sources - although it's not always obvious.

All of my domains and email accounts are hosted at Hostgator in the USA and their tech support say that my experience isn't uncommon, although it's more difficult than ever to block them because in doing so you might be blocking legitimate incoming email traffic. The other big problem is that the zillion emails that purport to be from one of my business email accounts may be considered bulk spam and end up creating problems for me with my own hosting company. It's a big problem and I'm not sure what the solution is.

Thanks Colin, yeah I think I knew the gist of all that, so there's no real solution. I wasn't expecting a solution just enquirng if others had the same sudden increase in junk last week

I did set up a junk removal tool with ISP Demon a while back so that my junk folder didn't receive this stuff, but as you said some legitimate mail gets caught up in that, and at that time it was mail from yahoo groups and stuff from my dauaghter that I was not receiving.

So I now let all the junk come to me but as I identify the first of it the repeats of it goes into a junk folder which I scroll through occasioanally (as normally it' s just a few a week) before permanently deleting, but for now it's everyday.

The trouble with Junk Mail filters is that they can only work on what they're aware of and from what they or third parties have learned. The phishers and trojan distributors are clever now because they seem to be able to find new ways around it that make it difficult for you to impose preventative measures without blocking your "trusted" stuff - you don't know what's what.

I do seem to have a lot of packages awaiting my collection, though!!!

For years, I had hundreds of junk emails daily (I'm with Freeserve/ Wanadoo/Orange) which I used to deal with via their webmail site spam filters if I got loads on my OE page. All of a sudden they stopped and the junk mail on the Orange webmail site showed maybe 10 rather than 1000s over a week. Don't know what happened but long may it continue!

Right at the beginning (2003) I had a feeling Yahoo was to blame as O/H used my PC for internet access as he wasn't allowed to access it on his work laptop at the time. He used and still does Yahoo groups.

Downside is that for some reason Martin Lewis' weekly newsletter won't come on my FS email address but will happily go to my Google one. Confused

I've not missed any others but maybe there are others that Orange won't allow. Would love to know how to remedy that.

I know I did nothing to any of the settings but I'll check out the permissions. I have a feeling the newsletters disappeared at the same time as the spam which I thought a bit strange.

Oh. Today 40 mails from 'Royal Mail'. And about 40 other mails all from different 'addresses' and all saying the same rubbish thing about seeking international business partner...

Oh, and bogus registrations at R2ok have suddenly started up again..... Sad

Yes, I noticed. The spam has returned with a vengeance; last night I had 135 emails to one of my domain-based email addresses that no longer exists, but my email server actually puts an auto redirect to my catch-all address ("webmaster@...") and this is now scooping up all the emails that hit the server but whose destination is unknown.

I'm talking to my Houston, Texas, based web host to see how this can be filtered. It's really tricky though but they all purport to be from me - and that means that these emails are probably hitting the inboxes of thousands of others, too.

All the emails from "me" contain a cloaked link to a viagra website. Hmmmm. It's really, really annoying!

the junk folder was full of stuff 'from' Royal Mail, UPS, Hoo.do and I always get spam that appears to come from LinkedIn. I've never registered with LinkedIn and don't feel I want to as I wonder if I could tell the difference between real and spam Mad
