Announced on Chris Evans Breakfast Show that Sara will be joining Radio 2 for her first regular show each Saturday night from 10pm to midnight, it's an 80's Show to compliment the weekend 60's and 70's decade shows.

Looking forward to this.

Well, we've been commenting on here that an Eighties show was overdue for quite some time, now.
Bit of a strange slot, but worth a try on iPlayer!

...... tainted lurv, oh-we-oh-oh-bum-bum, tainted lurv.....

Once I ran from you....

I'll be in beddie bye byes at that late hour but it can be saved on the iplayer for that awful just after Sunday lunch show, and before sounds of the seventies.

I gave you all a girl could give you...

I'm usually watching Match Of The Day at that time but will give it a go. It does seem a strange time slot.
My favourite musical era is of course the late 60s/early 70s but the 80s was a fabulous time as well. I just fear the programme will feature the usual inane rubbish that Radio 2 plays every day anyway: Madonna, Pet Shop Boys etc. And what are the latest odds on 'Don't You Want Me' by Human League being played early on?

And which idiot wrote the website details? The 80s saw the emergence of David Bowie?? Confused Confused

Well as I enjoy listening to Sara Cox and love eighties music I guess I'll be a regular listener though like Rach it might be on I'Player

Looking on the positive side it will hopefully provide something decent to listen to in place of the usual rubbish on R2 on Sundays Smile

Surely that should read 'The latest (at that time, of course) incarnation of David Bowie. He, of course, having been around since the 1960s!

Sara is the ideal age for 80's show. I guess there be songs which an't normally played on the station and anywhere else not like the normal branded ones we hear?

A missed opportunity to shake up Sundays then. Of course R2 management failed to admit that the move of Sunday Half Hour was probably wrong and that Clare Balding is not the right person for a religious based Sunday breakfast programme. Sunday Love Songs could have been handed to Janey Le Grace thus introducing a new female to the line up and in any event she is far better than Steve Wright. Wogan could have been pensioned off and the programme handed to Paul O'Grady. EP could have been replaced by Sara Cox if we have to and she could have done a combined Sounds of the 70's & 80's. Johnnie Walker could then have been allowed ( 4.00 to 7.00 pm) to play the music he really loves and which you get the impression he is not allowed to do now. That would leave Michael Ball and Claire Teal to carry on as now. I see there was no reference to the 11.00 to 12.00 programme. With Don Black only contracted to October are we to see another new name in that spot ?

As for the other changes then I never listen to Jo Whiney. Time is running out for Frank Renton's brass programme and The Organist Entertains. They will surely be gone in 12 months. So much for Radio 2's remit to cover a wide range of music.

I doubt I'll listen. I really don't think we need anymore 'Sounds of .....' type shows. I'm more for a mixture of all decades apart from the 60s, as they really shaped the way for things to come.

Unless it uses the Sounds of the Sixties template, rather than the Sounds of the 70s one which plays everything you hear every other day on Radio 2, then I fail to see the point, other than to give Sara Cox something to do now that she has been thrown out of the Radio 1 nest.

Merging and extending the Big Band show on Sunday evening, and a promise to go back to the 1920s, is a small victory for John W and likeminded fans of the genre, but it may be a shortlived one, if the strong hint that they cannot afford to keep running the BBC Big Band leads to its demise. It is also a shame that they can't find someone better than Clare Teal to present it - fantastic singer, but pretty wooden at reading a script.

I'm reasonably pleased about the changes. I welcome the expansion of Clare Teal's big band programme to two hours on Sunday nights. I agree about her wooden presentation but at least she plays fantastic music - and yes, she is a VERY good singer with great stage presence. I saw her recently in an Eastbourne big band show. I wonder what will follow at 11pm after Don Black finishes his stint?

Russell Davies at 11pm on Mondays also suits me fine but I hope it will closely resemble his current Sunday night show. It looks as if Desmond Carrington and Friday Night Is Music Night are safe - at least for the time being. Phew!

How interesting.
Clare Teal's show will include "archive material and special guests and incorporate music from the 1920s to the present day".

At last, the return of music from 1920s-1940s that Malcolm Laycock use to play :0)

For me they did, I got married ( 1st time around, I can remember being stood in the church thinking, I don't wanna do this, but at 17 years and 10 months old, I thought if I backed out I'd get in trouble).

Once all that House music took off, the 80s were ruined.

Anyway there's one in the list from 1988.

That's a cracking list. I'd listen to that!
Favourite Duran track was Save a Prayer.

'Remember the good old nineteen-eighties....
When things were so uncomplicated...
I wish I could go back there again....
and everything could be the same.'

Cool
They're all right (except Laurie Anderson - I could never stand more than a nanosecond of that, and it goes on for eight minutes!). Mind you, you might have ruddles complaining that the producer only plays stuff from the first half of the decade Laughing

Here is my choice:

Don't You Want Me.....no, only joking!

1. Native New Yorker...Odyssey
2. Rapture...Blondie
3. Memories Fade...Tears For Fears
4. Do You Really Want To Hurt Me...Culture Club
5. With The Pride..Spandau Ballet
6. Chance... Big Country
7. Big Log...Robert Plant
8. So In Love..OMD
9. The Power Of Love..Frankie Goes To Hollywood
10. Blind Curve...Marillion
11. If I Were You..Stevie Nicks
12. Wishful Thinking...China Crisis
13. It's A Thin Line Between Love And Hate...The Pretenders
14. Wrapped Around Your Finger..The Police
15. True Colours...Cindy Lauper
16. Build..The Housemartins
17. Red Lights...Curiousity Killed The Cat
18. Toy Soldier...Martika
19. Especially For You...Kylie and Jason
20. Eyes Without A Face...Billy Idol

There's a few album tracks there, far too obscure for predictable Radio 2 but it's a pretty good reflection of the 80s, and all excellent songs.

Oh my, fantasy 80s playlists.
The temptation is too great...

1. Another Brick In The Wall (Pt II) - Pink Floyd (No 1 at the start of the decade)

2. Breathless - Jake Burns and the Big Wheel (what Burns and Steve Grantley did during the Stiff Little Fingers hiatus)

3. Tom's Diner - Suzanne Vega (Original version, before it was made into an unlikely dance hit by DNA)

4. An Ubhal as Airde (The Highest Apple) - Runrig (First and only track in Gaelic language to make the Top 20. Used in a commercial for Carlsberg lager)

5. Lean On Me (Ah-li-ayo) - Red Box (Debut and biggest hit for a band named after something Slade left behind, with a video which included signing for the deaf)

Three In A Row - South Africa, apartheid issues and controversies...

6. Diamonds On The Soles Of Her Shoes - Paul Simon (from Graceland, first CD I bought)

7. Nelson Mandela - Special AKA

8. (Something Inside) So Strong - Labi Siffre

.......

9. Cry - Godley and Creme (classic video of morphing faces)

10. The Invisible Man - Queen (written by drummer Roger Taylor, the only song of theirs to mention all four band members in the lyric)

11. What Have You Done For Me Lately - Janet Jackson (Michael wasn't the only Jackson making a mint in the 80s)

12. Susanna - Art Company (Ludicrous novelty record by Dutch group)

13. Don't You Want Me - Human League (The 80s pop equivalent of the Generation Game conveyor belt's cuddly toy)

14. Ballad Of A Spycatcher - Leon Rosselson (with Billy Bragg and The Oysterband) (The record the BBC didn't ban, but could have)

15. Sheldon Bloom - Marti Webb ( little-played track from Andrew Lloyd Webber's musical, written with her in mind, Tell Me On A Sunday)

16. Poison Arrow - ABC

17. Thirtysomething TV theme - W G Snuffy Walden (from hit American series, shown on Channel 4 from 1987)

18. Papa's Got A Brand New Pigbag - Pigbag (Disco favourite)

19. Burn Rubber On Me - Gap Band (the follow-up to Oops Upside Your Head, that awful track you had to get down on the floor and ruin your skirt/trousers for)

20. Do They Know It's Christmas - Band Aid II (No 1 at end of decade)

I wonder how far the station can go what they play as there was fair bit of heavy rock in the 80's - It'll be interesting playing some feature songs from ACDC, Deep Purple etc? Maybe Sara will get some callers to choose some songs - hopefully not the usual stuff. I love the 80's. I guess the show won't play the normal stuff.

Mark: Deep Purple were hardly an 80s band!

Formed in 1968, they in effect split up in 1976. I hope you're not producing Sounds of the 80s!

Richard Allinson should have got this gig-pleased to see a dedicated show to the 80's finally woven into the schedules.

Hopefully this show will be a gem in the crown over time.

Is it only me?

Cox is an awful choice for 80's presenter, she was only 14 when the decade ended and 6 when it started, it needs to be a presenter who was around at the time as of Brian Matthews is of the 60's, anecdotes count for a lot. Cox finished me with R1.

R2 seems to have glossed over a whole generation of jocks Simon Bates, Gary Davies, Bruno Brooks, Mark Goodyear, Kid Jenson etc surely there are far better presenters available than gob on a stick Cox for the 80's show?

One hopes that when Brian Matthews does retire, his show will go to someone like Tony Blackburn, but I fear Shennan is more likely to give it to someone like Chris Moyles....

Sara Cox is as good as anyone...not that I'd listen, regardless of the presenter.

I agree with kengeo that Sara is quite a strange choice for the reasons stated but I like her as a presenter and I suspect her tenure in this slot may be shortlived as it's simply a way of her getting her feet under the R2 table - I wouldn't be at all surprised if after a few months she ends up swapping places with Richard Allinson Smile

I'd rather she swapped with Evans. At least I may then be able to listen to R2 in the mornings!

If I was interviewing for the R2 Controller's job you would be my ideal candidate. I like your ideas very much. Very Happy
