On one of the rare occasions that I listen to Jeremy Vine's programme lately I hear him read a text from Helen May informing us that she left the USA only last night - avoiding the House's "budget cliff" action by a hair's breadth!

How very odd, but welcome back, Helen. Smile

Thanks Colin and it's nice to see you back too!

We got into the house at 12.45 and by the time the kettle had boiled I noticed it was 12.59 so turned on the radio to hear the news partly about the US, as that was the sole topic over there!

Went to laptop to email friends we stayed with to say we were home safe and heard JV talking. Couldn't resist emailing in, especially when the next track he played was Route 66 - we were on it between Albuquerque and Amarillo last week!

I've been looking in occasionally and noticed that it was even quieter than it had been before I took my leave almost a year ago.

I should add that I listen to the station even less than I did then!

I remember travelling on the same section of Route 66 about ten years ago

What quite surprised me was that we hear the names of such places in song lyrics and imagine them to be quiet sleepy country towns so it comes as rather a culture shock to find just how large and urbanised they are Shocked
