I don't know whether any of you has been listening to this over the weekend but it basically comprises the so called 'Top 500 tracks voted for by Smooth listeners

It began on Friday morning and finishes tomorrow morning just before 10am when Simon Bates will be playing the Number One - I've been dipping in and out of it over the weekend and to me it seems to be a completely pointless exercise as it is clear to me that only votes for tracks which fit in the station's music profile seem to have been included mainly soul and some Motown tracks plus a little soft rock but nothing like Meat Loaf The Manics or Deep Purple

I just can't believe that not a single mainstream or hard rock track would not achieve some kind of position in a genuinely produced chart and whilst the station might not normally include such things on its regular playlist then surely an exception to this policy has to be made if a genuine final chart is what they are seeking to achieve

I think most of these things are tuned to a particular station's remit. I don't suppose a top 500 on Planet Rock would contain much Barry Manilow or Neil Diamond for example. Laughing

Heard a bit on Friday morning but have had a hectic weekend so not heard much radio at all.

Will no doubt hear the conclusion tomorrow morning!

Have never listened to Smooth, I'm put off by the name. Smooth equals bland. Though I might listen tomorrow to see what their listeners are voting for. I don't doubt it will be all Abba and Queen and Madonna. Still, anything's better than Ken Bruce going on and on about Christmas.

Certainly that's true Toggy but the clue would be in the name 'Planet Rock'

Smooth is a far more imprecise or even 'bland' name so I would have expected certain rock tracks to be in there - things like 'Two Out Of Three Ain't Bad' and The Final Countdown and probably certain tracks from artists like The Moody Blues

Still I suppose commercial radio will always be answerable to its advertisers first and its audience second Smile

Instead you'll be sick of the Christmas adverts!

More so now than ever before, I suspect, especially since the radio regulatory system was all but disbanded!

Not really any great surprise that John Lennon bagged the top spot even though Simon Bates purported to be surprised - not very credible considering the fact that he had the full chart four days ago :roll

However it was good to hear the genuine choices of listeners as compared to the usual regimented play list which as Colin rightly says is heavily influenced by advertisers and sponsors - I think the listeners probably have marginally better musical taste compared to the persons who regularly select the music Smile

I listened to some of David Jensen's show on Smooth earlier and couldn't help thinking that such a knowledgable presenter is worth a better platform than such a bland station. For a year or so recently he did a very good show on Planet Rock as well as co-hosting with Rick Wakeman on Saturday mornings on that station. It was a great alternative to the tiresome Graham Norton, whose "guests" are only there to sell their latest wares.

Maybe it's me, but Smooth's playlist seems to consist of about 40 tracks, and presenters' links seem to be recycled too (perhaps unsurprisingly).

One of the best shows on Smooth was axed - am I allowed to say that - Smile
only a few months ago - namely the Double Top Twenty Show formerly hosted by David Jensen which in my view and despite the adverts was at least as good a show as POTP Sad

I say that because Jensen's knowledge of music history contrasts very clearly with the distinct lack of knowledge in many areas on the part of Tony Blackburn who couldn't properly do his job without the help of one Mr Swern - and even he frequently gets things wrong Rolling Eyes

As you say I suspect the agenda is dictated by people who have little interest in the music played just as long as they reap their 'due rewards' Sad
