Well off we go,at last, with Russia against Saudi Arabia at 4.

More muted expectations of the England team, than usual, this time which is probably better for the lads.

Here's hoping for good performances from them and some good games all round.

Well, what a cracking match between Spain and Portugal. Very Happy Spain played some lovely football at times and just when it seemed they were going to win the game a silly foul,it seemed to me, in a dangerous area, let Portugal and Ronaldo in again.

All that talent and all the money that goes with it and it's still not enough,it would seem, for some people. Rolling Eyes

A cracking game indeed. Possibly the best World Cup game for a long time.
I thought Spain were by far the better team but it all came down to those three Ronnies.

As for his little tax problem, a huge fine plus financial penalties (no pun intended) would be best for everyone. Messi got away with it too last year.

A dream start to the tournament for Ronaldo..the opposite for Messi.(Iceland played wonderfully well.)Will be interesting to see how they go on as it progresses.

Heard the term sweeper keeper this afternoon...ages since I've heard that.

And what about Mexico !! Cool

Thoroughly deserved win!

I'm enjoying this World Cup...so far.. Very Happy

You could almost hear the collective gasp of relief, from England football supporters, up and down the country last night when Harry's header went in..never easy being an England fan..Shocked Laughing

More viewers for last night's match than for the Royal wedding earlier in the year...

It Certainly isn't. I'm glad that history did (almost) repeat itself from France '98 when England last played Tunisia and beat them 2-0.
Back up to date and what a shame England gave away that penalty, and the officials didn't notice two other offences that should have given England a couple of penalty kicks.

Yes it has been a very good World Cup so far, and with some of the favourites under-performing the competition is wide open!
Quite a mystery why VAR could not decide that (twice) hauling Kane to the ground was a penalty, their opinion must have been the grappling was 50/50 but I don’t see it that way.

Heard talk of this the other night but haven't heard it mentioned anywhere since..

Heard Terry Butcher being asked,on the radio, how he felt when he saw Maradona in floods of tears, after their defeat, the other night...Back came the reply.....'Delighted' Laughing Laughing

Hopefully England won't have us fans wringing our hands today. It would be lovely to see a good, straight forward win.

Germany last night!!! What on earth was that Swedish defender thinking of ??

As for the commentator.. Rolling Eyes

Indeed it was. I saw the second half at my dear late dad's old 'local' in Badshot Lea. I remember as a child buying bottles of lemonade in that pub back in the 1960s when it had an off-sales hatch between the two bars! Let's hope this (& the previous) win gives them the confidence to face up to tougher opposition like Belgium.

That was a strange game yesterday. Not that I'm complaining. It makes a change to be able to sit back and enjoy an England game, as opposed to sitting on the edge of your seat.

I think this has been the best start to a World Cup that I can remember. Full of attacking football, with only a few exceptions.

Well done to our lads for qualifying after only two games. As was expected, really. They're learning and improving all the time, so now we're about to find out what they can do. But whatever the outcome, Gareth has shown that he is a brilliant England manager and hopefully will be, for many years to come. And with Harry, we will always be in with a shout. Great to see the young players blossoming before our eyes. Just cut out a few silly mistakes and who knows? I'm not getting carried away...at least not yet!

That reminded me of 'off licences' at the side of pubs,LEE, where you could buy alcohol to take home. Have I got that right? It is a long time ago... Very Happy

During the Spain v Morocco match Martin Keown asked 'Do they (Spain) want it enough? I have never understood it when commentators say that. Surely everyone who's playing wants a win, badly, especially at this level.??

Good game. Smile

Ah, the old off licence hatch, where you took the bottles back, bought a lemonade and looked quizically at the large jar of arrowroot biscuits!

Sublime goal from Messi last night. As much as I like to see the big teams get beaten, I'm so pleased the little genius is still in the competition.

Though Nigeria can rightly feel hard done by, with some dodgy decisions.

I heard,on the radio, this morning that he gets £10.000 a day from FIFA to attend games/World Cup. Shocked

They certainly didn't deserve to get through. Just sorry that South Korea's performance didn't see them through...what a day for them. Cool

So England are to play Columbia. Surely then, it's time to dig out this Kirsty McColl track: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wknHuaTzoEM

I remember the match,LEE, but not that song,so thanks! Very Happy Michael Owen surely wasn't old enough to be on the pitch....Wink Very Happy Thursday's match was such a disappointment to me...It showed (me) that Belgium's B team were better than our B team...and not much more. As for what could happen in our next game,I haven't a clue so it is with trepidation that I await the kick off on Tuesday night.

This World Cup continues to thrill,though...France's game against Argentina was just terrific. and we have seen some wonderful players...that young French lad,Mbappe, was sensational...and Cavani for Argentina thrilled too with those goals.

Oh Those Russians!

Well it was certainly no re-run of 1998. All England could manage was a 1-1 draw at full time (+ stopages) and the half hour extra time! Then came the penalty 'shoot-out' and for once England can hold their collective heads high as England were victorious. Ermm - is it still OK to play this track? https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wknHuaTzoEM Oh, come on radio stations, re-discover it and give it an airing, I think our lads deserve it! It's on her album Tropical Brainstorm.

Which we won...didn't we? I won't wake up tomorrow to find it was all a dream, will I?
Shocked Laughing

Brilliant night (eventually) for all us English supporters. Cool...(and Gareth and his team)
Penalty shootout showing again on BBC...much easier watching second time round. Very Happy

No, you won't wake up & find it a dream. It was certainly a heart-stopping game. It was such a shame that the ref was unable to locate his red card when it was needed! And it seemed to be needed a few times in the early part of the game! Sweden will not be a push-over after seeing their last few games, but I do hope that the match officials won't be following 'Eurovision rules'!

Very Happy

As for red cards,LEE, one of the Columbian coaches should have had one as well for shouldering Sterling at one point of the night.... disgraceful.

Still I'm too happy to dwell on that...he'll be going home and we won't ...well, not just yet! Laughing

Okay, the dream is over but it was good while it lasted. If England could have just carried on how they started we would be facing France on Sunday but credit to Croatia, who hung on in there and came out the winners.

We still have have much to cheer about, however.... a young team who hopefully will mature and go on to bigger and better things in the years to come...last night was not the end, just the beginning..

Well done lads! Cool

Indeed! At least they shouldn't have to 'smuggle' the team out of Heathrow (or whatever airport they fly into) by an alternative exit this time to avoid the wrath of fans like they have done in previous years. This time they'll be able to emerge in the normal way to the cheers of fans greatful for a fine effort. Let's hope this is the start of greater things in the years to come, including bringing home silverware!
