So sad to learn of the death of Mike Nesmith, the coolest Monkee and criminally under-rated in his own right.

I've been listening to The Monkees' wonderful 2018 Christmas Album today and was already sad thinking we'd lost Peter Tork and producer Adam Schlesinger since it's release so I'm a bit down now.

Anyway, here's a lovely late-period Monkee song with Nesmith on vocals:

Very sad. He was my favourite Monkee (or as Tony Blackburn spells it, Monkey).

It's always been such a pity that Nez never got the recognition his music so deserved. For me, he was the pioneer of Country Rock. He was making it before Gram Parsons and The Eagles, but hey...I remember arguing this on R2 many moons ago. His music was truly beautiful and deserved to be more well known.

I had the pleasure and privilege to see Mike in concert a few years back, at the Union Chapel. Had to check when it was...and whaddya know. It's on You Tube! It was in 2012 and I shall relive it time and again. His concert was like no other, in that he regaled us all with little stories between songs, which he had on the i Pad before him.

The only slight grumble was that he didn't play Listen To The Band, which was my favourite Monkees record. Although all the singles go straight to my heart, because of all the boyhood memories that are attached to them.

And he was still playing his music, with his great friend Micky Dolenz, right up until last month, even though it must have taken every ounce of strength he had, to do so.
