On BBC Four tonight at 9
In 2011, Glen Campbell announced he had been diagnosed with Alzheimer's disease and that he would be bowing out with a final album and farewell tour across Britain and America. This documentary tells Campbell's remarkable life story, from impoverished childhood in Arkansas through huge success first as a guitarist and then as a singer, with great records like Wichita Lineman and Rhinestone Cowboy. With comments from friends and colleagues including songwriter Jimmy Webb and Mickey Dolenz of the Monkees, it's a moving story of success, disgrace and redemption as rich as any of the storylines in Campbell's most famous songs.

Upset me when Jimmy Webb said about Glen asking him if he wrote Wichita Lineman.....what a terrible illness Alzheimer's disease is.
I never tire of hearing him sing his songs ...what a lovely voice he has. |

That was a bit of a moment, Becky, when Jimmy Webb recounted that. But what a great tribute to Glenn. Not mawkish at all, just a celebration (with no airbrushing, re the addiction and failed relationships) of a fantastically talented man.
The concert that followed, was quite something as well. Glenn, with Jimmy Webb on piano and the LSO at the Royal Festival Hall, from 1978. His guitar playing was mesmerising.
Loved it all.

Enjoyed his choice of songs/instrumentals at the Royal Festival Hall .....some quite different than I thought would be the case.
His voice at the end of MacArthur Park..wow!
Jimmy Webb wrote it as MacArthur Park not MacArthur's Park but couldn't get Richard Harris to sing it without the 's so left him to it in the end....I noticed Glen sang it without the 's 
Was that Charlotte Church doing the voice-over ,in the documentary,does anyone know?..I meant to look at the credits at the end but forgot. |

I read,at the weekend,that Glen is in a care home now and has been since earlier on in the year.  |
