MG sounding so good on the breakfast show.

Certainly his delivery/style is so much calmer than Chris Evans-also Mark Goodier has a keen interest in the music he plays.

Magic gearing up nicely for a national roll out in 2015 with an excellent group of music loving DJ's.

This is sounding very promising, I am very much looking forward to the national roll out. Very Happy

Great news but it begs the question as to why Mark is covering on a little local London station and not on a major national station like Radio 2 where he belongs Rolling Eyes

The answer is Shennan, he can't see further than the end of his nose. Rolling Eyes

Angela is right and Shennan's obsession with getting celebs to cover shows etc-take the ridiculous decision in bringing Christopher Biggins recently.

Sadly that decision is the straw that breaks the camel's back as far as I am concerned with Radio 2.

Ruddlescat-Don't underestimate the plans of Magic.

They have a great crop of presenters, the various formats feels fresh ( they actually have competitions which aren't rigged) and the DJ's actually seemed pleased to be there.

London today, UK wide post January.

Imho they will take listeners from Radio 2 come January which will be good as I think audience drop on Radio 2 could force Radio 2 to update themselves.

They could do if they can formulate a proper night time schedule of live programmes. I think there has been quite a bit of disquiet over what Radio 2 has just done to its overnight schedule. Yes, Alex Lester & Janice Long are still there but only from midnight-3:00am, with Janice on for the first four nights & Alex the other three, so not really the same as they had before. There is a very loyal night time audience out there who don't want repeats of past shows, but proper live programmes.

I'd say bringing in known presenters like Allinson and Goodier, even on a stand-in/freelance basis, is a good move for Magic ahead of its national rollout - obviously these presenters are known nationally from their prior roles, particularly at the Beeb. So when Magic goes national it'll have a strong pool of recognised presenters to pick from - and if they go down well on sit-in, it's likely Mark and Richard will be offered more slots as they come available. It's also good to see proper radio people getting the call-up, rather than going the Global route of hiring from the ranks of TV. Of course, Nick Snaith (and, if/when he returns, Foxy) are known over large parts of the country from their Heart and Pepsi Chart era shows too, so they're not exactly unfamiliar voices themselves. All in all Magic's actually, despite everything, in pretty fine fettle for the national roll-out, and could do well, particularly given Smooth's roll back to local level. With no actual overnight DJ at present Magic possible will also roll one out in the new year.

Unfortunatly they have done already, with the BBC trusts cost cutting. Not just the schedules, or DJ's ,but across the production side and producers etc.. Janice Long what I gather is moving back to Liverpool anyway and will broadcast from Manchester.

I don't think any commercial radio station will hurt Radio 2. Although they are attracting DJs again who used to.work in the sector so the you turn is happen. That's cause Radio 2 are focusing differently on there shows and thinking big named celebrities will attract the listeners. Magic and other commercial radio stations do the same, maybe not as much. Magic over the festive period will have Olly Murs, Caroline Flack and Martin Kemp presenting shows. It's about getting the balance right, unfortunately the days have gone just having a proper radio DJ across radio 2, so the Goodier and Allinsons of the world move On.

Radio 2 is national on FM as well as the other platforms. Magic is going national on Digital One DAB and possibly hurt listeners outside the London area, only if the station is well promoted.

Magic is one of a number of outlets that's governed by a consortium whose aim is to serve up robotic radio to the masses at the lowest cost - and with the minimum of originality. It perfectly exemplifies the state of UK radio today.

What a sad and sorry state!

Colin-Magic are not serving up robotic radio imho, if their breakfast and drive time shows are anything to go by. I find the formats very enjoyable. I find the likes of Mark Goodier and Richard Allinson brilliant DJ's.

If anything Radio 2 are serving up robotic radio imho if their day time output is anything to go by. I find Radio 2 presenters Bruce, Vine, Wright etc way past their sell by dates.

I agree that they're good presenters. It's just that the station is rubbish due to the way that everything is server-driven. They don't choose the music - they just hit the "next" button at precisely the right moment. Everything is programmed very tightly and they're just there to add a human element to the transmission. That's why I hate this current style of format radio - and why I now avoid all of them.

That's the new way these big commercial radio companies function now. It is the shame the state of UK has changed over the years and so many have lost their jobs.

That's why all "Heart" branded stations - to mention just one brand - all sound the same. The music, ads and promos are all centrally programmed and the "local" input is merely annoying presenters gabbling on inside precise time slots when the server tells them to.

Although the systems vary slightly, they all do much the same job. All main BBC network stations use a system called VCS Dira!4, with some of the national commercial franchisees using either Genesys or RCS Zeta. A lot of BBC locals use a system called Radioman, which is popular with smaller broadcasters. They all facilitate one thing - that all sound sources are files that are read from a central server. A playout list is constructed by either the presenter, producer or studio manager (at the BBC) on the server (they can do this remotely), and each file is then called up in sequence for the presenter to cue by opening the fader or touching a screen. The "next" event is cued when the current one is live. They can interrupt the sequence if needed only to resume later, but it can be tricky if timings need to be absolutely spot-on due to other stations opting out and in at precise times. Technically interesting (for me) but the result is bland radio most of the time.

That's why I avoid them all - and why I listen to the output of alternatives like good old Radio Caroline. There, the jocks are free to play whatever they want whenever they want as long as they're album tracks. The contrast with our appalling franchised radio stations couldn't be more stark these days.

I agree, Colin. Another appalling station is something called Gold, which I must admit I listen to sometimes, and which I presume is syndicated nationally. It really does play the same tedious stuff all the time. ELO, Queen etc. One listener emailed them recently saying 'gosh, you've not played The Drifters for half an hour now'. The goon of a presenter didn't realise she was being sarcastic.

Don't know Ian. I only occasionally listen to Magic Drivetime with Richard Allinson but haven't noticed his name on the website if I listen online.

What a huge improvement on the boring and dreadfully predictable SW

Give him the slot permanently I say and rid us of the likes of 'hands up' and 'serious jocking ' for good - not to mention SW's boring array of guests - or should I say barrow boys (and girls) - after all they're only there to sell us something or promote something Rolling Eyes

I only heard a short bit of the show but liked what I heard. It's ages since I've listened to Mark Goodier though. Read something just the other day on Twitter from Radio Today that he is CEO of Wise Buddah.
