How poignant that the tribute programme was billed for the very day he died. Sad to see him go . What a great double act he and David Jacobs were.

I had been listening to both of them since teenage years starting with Desmond on Movie Go Round and David in Journey Into Space. Never saw Emergency Ward 10 as that was before we had a TV.

RIP Desmond, thanks for all your lovely programmes.

Oh, so sad to see another R2 presenter pass away. I frequently listened to his show when it was on Sundays, less frequently when it moved to Friday. Always a very odd mix of music, all from his own collection, always something interesting and he did his bit go keep the memory of stars of the 1920s-50s.

Sad,sad news,but to be still working,doing the thing you love most, near enough to the end of a long life...I'm sure Desmond would have settled for that.

There were some lovely tributes on Jeremy Vine's programme today..

Director of BBC Radio Bob Shennan said he was "warm, caring and generous".
"He was a natural broadcaster and a key part of the BBC Radio family," Mr Shennan said.

Head of Radio 2 Lewis Carnie said The Music Goes Round was "full of musical gems and treasures", adding that Carrington will be "very much missed by his listeners".

All well and good but very hollow sounding after the way they treated another 'key' part of the 'BBC Radio family',Brian Matthew.

Does anyone know how his broadcasting from his home in Perth came about?

How very sad.
Many a solitary and dreary Friday evening long-distance commute homeward was rendered a little more interesting for me by the Desmond Carrington show. In fact, that's how I became a rather unlikely fan.

Most of the records were not to my taste, but they were almost always interesting, and I loved that unpredictability, coupled with Desmond's gracious presentation.

As has been said, it's great that he was able to keep doing his show almost until the end.
