Sad news just announced by Radio 2.

UPDATE: Oh dear. Seems someone jumped the gun a little:

I'm going to speculate (again - see below) that there maybe some issues within his family.

The news reader at 3pm sounded uncomfortable reading the backtrack statement.

Sad news but I cannot help thinking that the SOTS production company and/ or BBC R2 management made the right call here despite the criticism they received. Perhaps they had further information about Brian's health that was not in the public domain. As it was Brian was allowed one last SOTS programme and the BBC's succession planning avoided weeks of speculation about who might take over.

That seemed to be the implication when Radio 2's boss appeared on Feedback. My guess is his family knew how how ill he really was but the man himself wanted to carry on. Family told BBC he was giving up, he told papers he wasn't. Just my speculation though.

At least he got a chance to properly say goodbye to listeners.

Well what a mammoth c--k up we've had today

How can an allegedly reputable organisation like the BBC announce on its biggest radio station the death of a former presenter only to find out the man is still alive Shocked

It really just adds insult to injury after the dreadful treatment of Brian as agreed by us all on another thread

Still I guess it could have been worse if this disaster had happened last Saturday Smile

Very embarrassing and an error. Obviously there will be a full investigation. Brian is currently in hospital and obviously our thoughts are with him and his family.
