I havn't listened to Brands show on Radio 2 yet and I dont think I will ever. My feelings are that he's really not right for the network. He seems to be in the national papers everyday whether it's good or bad he's not given the image of network any justice. I think he could end up a mild form of Chris Evans when he was a wild child in the 90's.

Hopefully time will tell and he dosn't end up in another part of the network schedules.

I like Russell Brand but I do not think Saturday night's are the right place for him. I reckon he'll end up with a weekday slot within 6 to 12 months.

Hey,

One of my pet gripes is making judgements on something you haven't experienced. Maybe you should listen Mark and then judge.

I had the unfortunate 'pleasure' of acquiring part of his show recently - first of all I had to check which station I was tuned into since it sounded like a poor night's worth of Talk Radio. I then realised it was the much-vaunted new signing for R2 and after 15 minutes of hard concentration (partly trying to work out what the hell he was on about, the rest trying to work out what the point was and when the music would start), I decided not to bother anymore.

At least when he was on 6 Music he was out of sight, out of mind. To think Bob Harris had to be shunted back an hour for this. I know part of R2's remit is to have a certain amount of speech-based output but does most of it have to be from RB? Crying or Very sad

I understand the humour alright but it just didn't appear to be funny and I kept wondering how much he is being paid for such drivel - my opinion, natch...

Then again, Saturdays in general started to go down the pan as far as I am concerned when Richard Allinson's show was axed in favour of Dermot O'Leary - someone else I can't be bothered with. Now I just 'Listen Again' on a Sunday to SM and BH's shows.

YMMV.

You are correct Danny. I' am judging him on his TV shows, and the person he is. I should listen to the radio shows.

He reminds me of the guys from the 80's band Tenpole Tudor who had a hit Swords Of A Thousand Men' Laughing

Mark,

I first discovered Russell Brand on MTV Dance in 1999. He used to host DFC (Dance Floor Chart) and what an amazing guy he was! I found him very entertaining - thank goodness Lesley Douglas discovered him.

Thanks, Mark - I've now got that song going through my head and will mentally call up the video any second now..... Evil or Very Mad Very Happy Exclamation

I'm partly basing my judgement on what I've seen of him on TV too - usually thoughts of "where's the remote" about five minutes into whatever he's on. Rolling Eyes

Another R2 black hole for me between 9 and 11 tonight, folks - looks like I'll be catching up with BFBS.

I've tried listening to Brand but he's not my cup of tea at all. I don't really think radio 2 is the right place for him, radio 1 would be more up his street.

I listened to about half an hour of his show last night, & just found it very boring. And t is more like Talk Radio. He's not spinning any discs, so what is the point of it being on Radio 2?
At least he's not on at a time I usually listen ,much to the radio!

Yes, I was unfortunate enough to catch another ten minutes or so last night. I know I'm supposed to show due respect to R2 presenters but frankly I didn't hear anything worth my respect - after a few minutes I mentally switched off what he was going on about and after ten minutes or so without a song being played, the 'off' button came into its own.... Exclamation R1 may be a better place for RB to display his 'talent'.

'Pointless' would be the word I would use. I "Listened Again" to "Fighting Talk" on R5 Live instead - proving that an hour's worth of speech-based radio *can* be funny.

0900-1100 on a Saturday night on R2 is now a no-go area for me, I'm afraid. That's three times I tried to give him a chance and each time I came away disappointed.

Agree - Cherskiy,

I tried and found him struggling to say something funny and coming out with something infantile!!

Even the trailers show him to be not so funny, they're quite embarrasing sometimes.

I agree he's not right for the station.

If you like him, fine - I've gave it a go and don't.

No, he needs to go back to 6 Music (or go across to R1) and let someone more worthwhile (IMHO) broadcast on a Saturday evening. Evil or Very Mad

I like Russell Brand but Saturday night is not the right place for him. What was Lesley Douglas thinking of moving Bob Harris further to the otherside of midnight in favour of 2 hours of non-stop giggling and prattle?

I am *not* a charva! Shocked Evil or Very Mad

Anyway, I would have thought chavs and chav-esses were more inclined to like RB since he pandered to the Big Brother brigade.

(Note: "Charva" is our local version of "chav".)

I like Russell Brand like I have already pointed out. But the thing that I hate about his radio show is there's far too much talk...after a while it gets banal. This was one of the downsides to Chris Evans' Saturday show - too much talk and fart-arsing around. Saturday nights should have been left alone for music fans.

Lord Evan,

Why didn't Lesley Douglas sack that useless idiot Dermot O'Leary? The live music could be broadcast on Stuart's show; either that or put Richard Allinson back on Saturdays in place of Dermot O'Leary.

I'll certainly agree with reinstating Richard Allinson, who should never have been axed in my opinion.

It wasn't exactly hard work to 'discover' him - he's barely out of the papers!

Sadly, he comes nowhere near the hype and his Saturday show is just dull.

I usually listen to his show via Listen Again on Sunday afternoons (1pm - 3pm) when the crap stuff is on Radio 2. I have to admit that I am beginning to find the non-stop prattle on his show banal. He should play a few more tracks. I know Lesley Douglas wanted more "speech" programming on Radio 2 but this is just ridiculous.

I guess he's an acquired taste them, but I very much enjoyed his 6Music show, and I think he's too bright a talent to stay there. Very original. very distinctive and downright hilarious - delighted to see R2 daring to be different.

I read on the Radio 1 message board that some of the listeners want Russell Brand on Radio 1. " I just wonder if Andy Parfitt could take him this week?

They can have him right now.... I was unfortunate enough to forget he was on and turned the radio on at around 2130 - boy, was that a mistake.

He's on Radio 1 soon, with a travelogue/stand-up show (like Ross Noble's shows on Radio 4, I guess. But not as funny).

It went even lower than that! The slot it was in usually gets 1.5m - 2m viewers so it was quite a drop.

On Saturday 6th October, I was drunk, bored and had nothing else better to do with my time, so I stayed indoors eating an Indian takeaway listening to Russell Brand. At around 9.30pm, he attacked Paul Hollingdale and slagged him off. This was in response to Paul saying that "Russell Brand is unsuitable for Radio 2" in an interview earlier that week.

Russell showed his complete arrogance by saying "I don't know his name but he was the first voice heard on Radio 2. Them next door will know who I mean". He then went onto say "Things have changed since your day. You might have been the first voice heard on Radio 2 but I am the latest voice so get over it." This then followed by endless laughing and piss taking towards Paul Hollingdale by Russell and his co-host.

Isn't it disgusting how the Radio 2 bosses allowed this behaviour to go on? Russell Brand showed total disrespect towards Paul Hollingdale and I think he should be made to apologise for his remarks. Paul Hollingdale was only echoing the thoughts of many other listeners out there, and if the truth be known, some of Russell's colleagues on Radio 2. Only the week before, Paul had returned to Radio 2 as part of the 40th birthday celebrations but a week later he is ridiculed on air by Russell Brand.

Paul Hollingdale clearly doesn't like what Lesley Douglas is doing to Radio 2.

I've only heard the clip that was used to promote Brand's podcast (about which Terry Wogan had a subtle sneer the other morning, I think) but it did surprise me that an egotistical, talentless and immature kid like Brand could be allowed to take this stance against a seasoned pro like Hollingdale and get away with it. I thought Hollingdale's 40th anniversary broadcast was superb and I'd love to hear more like it - although pigs will fly sooner, I assume.

Lesley Douglas obviously condones it. That says a lot really about the style of management at the BBC these days, does it not?

I heard Paul Hollingdale's 40th anniversary broadcast and I thought he was fine. He sounds a bit like the late Alan Freeman, but clearly enjoyed talking about the good old days. I also stayed tuned for Stewpot, Kenny Everett, Pick of the Pops Special and Brian Matthew. I do believe this was the first time I had ever listed to Radio 2 all-day on a Sunday. I switched off at 6.30pm when the boring stuff came on and switched over to Radio 1 at 7.00pm for Annie Nightingale.

I was really appalled with Russell Brand's attack on Paul Hollingdale. If the truth be known, Lesley Douglas probably laughed at it. Russell's show is pre-recorded so I think his attack and rant at Paul Hollingdale should have been edited out.

Russell Brand clearly shows arrogance and contempt towards those he dislikes. Hats off to Paul Hollingdale for saying the truth about Russell Brand - he IS unsuitable for Radio 2.
