A species of shark rarely seen alive because its natural habitat is 600 metres (2,000 ft) or more under the sea was captured on film by staff at a Japanese marine park this week.

The Awashima Marine Park in Shizuoka, south of Tokyo, was alerted by a fisherman at a nearby port on Sunday that he had spotted an odd-looking eel-like creature with a mouthful of needle-sharp teeth.

Marine park staff caught the 1.6 metre (5 ft) long creature, which they identified as a female frilled shark, sometimes referred to as a "living fossil" because it is a primitive species that has changed little since prehistoric times.

Fascinating looking thing!

Science question: If it's natural habitat in 600m you'd think it would explode when it got up to sea level Confused

If you looked like that, the laws of physics wouldn't dare argue with you.... Smile

600m is a long way down, but presumably sea level is also well within its tolerance levels - otherwise it would be fish food by now.

Fish and marine mammals are able to deal with greater changes in pressure than us humans. Don't ask me to explain the science behind why though!

I expect they are thick-skinned, but the gills, eyes and mouth can't be the same thickness Confused

Whales manage to dive to extreme depths all the time... yet they need to surface to breath, so it's obviously possible for marine animals to cope with such huge pressure changes.

And don't forget, just because it's the first time man has observed this creature near the surface, doesn't mean the species hasn't been doing it for it's entire existence
