It continues to both amaze and impress me, re the global reach Radio 2 has by the number of e-mails Richard reads out from so many folk who are in far flung places on planet earth.

We seem to complain a lot on this board about Radio 2-perhaps radio in other parts of the world is not very good at all hence the global audience who appear to be tuned in to Richard.

How much better really is radio2 given how much it has been dumbed down in the last few years, to the point that it's barely distinguishable from commercial radio, which, in itself was much better in the dim and distant past than it is nowadays. I'm not too sure that our radio really is that much better than radio in other countries.

I know we moan about Radio 2 (with good reason at times!) but it's not that bad. Apart from anything else if you are British at least it's in English!

Richard probably gets good listening figures from overseas because his show still plays better music than a lot of the shows.

Could not agree with you more Helen re the music Richard plays on his shows.

Richard also is very keen to feature new groups/songs that he thinks "his listener" might enjoy-something for everyone.

I disagree, RA puts out the very worst show on R2. Poor at best. He sounds so desperate. It’s all quite sad really and the muisc isn't chosen by him.

Richard chooses the music for both his weekend shows.

I agree with you Mark and Helen

A good show with a very competent presenter totally wasted in its present late slot
Yet another example of the Shennan marginalisation policy Sad

Richard Allinson is one of the few people that I switch the radio on to hear. I just wish that he could have his own regular show in a better timeslot.

I heard Richard saying in the early hours, " that one of his feature will be back in 2011. I just had the feeling he might move on at some stage with a better offer, but he must be happy what he's doing.

Perhaps the "better offer" will result in his doing the breakfast show when it's realised that the incumbent has annoyed his last listener?

Perhaps, but more likely to be that he gets continually overlooked by the person at Radio 2 who should make him a better offer.

Richard is sounding great on these weekend shows in early 2011.

Great features, superb music, funny stories-nothing to dislike whatsoever.

If you have yet to discover the best 6hrs on Radio 2 each week then try the iplayer to see what you are missing.

Has Richard suddenly become a Barry Manilow fan?-he keeps playing his new single on his weekend shows.

I don't listen to many of the shows on Radio 2 any more-so much of the daytime output is not to my taste, but is Barry's new single on the dreaded play list.

To be honest I think he just does what he's told and plays what the system is programmed to play. Pity, but that's life.

Well I've heard it a lot during the day, I'm guessing it could be on the playlist, sorry I've not checked it before posting. Embarassed

I assume the play-list only applies to the daytime schedules.

Surely Richard is not constrained into having play songs from the play-list on his weekend shows.

Incidentally I don't particularly like the new Barry Manilow single-very similar to some of his previous recordings.

Oh yes he is, Mark. In fact he played Barry Manilow this morning, and Josh Groban and Brooke Fraser, and Gwyneth Paltrow/Tim McGraw.

I will admit that he didn't sound too chuffed about it.

I read on the BBC Commissioning website recently the brief for the Janice Long and Alex Lester shows, as these are now being offered to the independent production companies.

Its interesting that they only get up to 3 playlist tracks per hour, compared to Radcliffe and Maconie on Daytime 6 Music with 1 freeplay per hour!

The problem is Richard taste of music is very good, but thats the way it is if he's restricted to playing from the playlist. Seems to be some un happy times at Radio 2 with people being pushed aside for the celebrities dragging there feet into the paths of these experienced knowledgeable radio broadcasters...

Anyone following Richard Allinson on his "new" twitter page.

He refers to it a lot during his weekend shows.

Very thoughtful tribute made by Richard Allinson in respect of the recent departed Amy Winehouse in last Sunday's Show (24/7).

I did smile during the handover of Richard Allinson to Zoe Ball on Saturday 6th August.

Richard told Zoe that in the days of him covering for Sarah Kennedy, he would often give out the answers in a cyptic fashion to the upcoming Popmaster Quiz hosted by Ken Bruce that particular day.

He told Zoe when Ken Bruce found out his "hair fell out".

I am not sure she really believed Richard or not-I detected from Richard's subtle humour she may be struggling just a little bit on daily Popmaster-just a hunch. Wink

I think the problem is that she doesn't really like doing Popmaster. Just a hunch! Smile

I think the problem is ZB is utterly unsuited to Ken's show and should be replaced by someone who is - just a hunch!

The problem is there are a couple more buttons to press and she can't multitask, and problems with running the desk.

Richard is back on Early Breakfast from the 15th Aug for a week.

Perhaps they should use Stuart Maconie, Alex Lester, both of whom have done Kens Show before. How about giving Janice Long a daytime outing?

No thanks to any of those suggestions.

Why are you looking backwards-look forward.

Suggested candidates perhaps for consideration should be the likes of Gideon Coe, Shaun Keaveny, Chris Hawkins , Lauren Laverne, David Jacobs, Trevor Nelson , Paul O'Grady etc.

All have a proven track record, the first two have done a good job on Ken's show in the past and still would now. I'm sure Janice Long would too given the chance. Why don't they try her out next time Ken is away?
I'll go along with Gideon Coe, Lauren Laverne, Chris Hawkins (just to hear him play a Bon Jovi track!) I'd love to hear David Jacobs do it. I wonder how would he fare doing Popmaster.

Richard mentioned earlier today on his Saturday show, that he had a 9 days on the trot stint coming up on Radio 2 and was really looking forward to it.

How refreshing to hear a presenter on Radio 2 who genuinely seems to enjoy the job of broadcasting.

Good work Mr Allinson.

Does anyone on these boards listen to Richard's weekend shows live or through the iplayer at a decent hour.

I do really enjoy the feature (bygones!-spelling?) he runs in the 3rd hour on his Saturday shows-picks a subject/theme and people text in with their stories etc.

Last Saturdays show featured "your hotel stories/experiences".

Some great and very funny stories read out-well worth a listen to if you need cheering up/looking for a laugh.

Great work Mr Allinson.
