Hmmm, I might take a listen! Did you say it's on DAB now? along with Tony Blackburn too?

Yes it's on National DAB now. From October the new schedules starts, but Simon as it says in the article doesn't start until January. Lynn Parsons takes charge. I don't know what the weekend schedule going to look like.

What a big steaming pile of poo. I know plenty of people who listen to Smooth here in the North West because it's a LOCAL alternative to Radio 2 but not as geriatric as the BBC stations. So, yeah, just nationalise it with dated Radio 1 throwbacks and knock out the few bits of character the wretched station actually has. Marvelous.

I may just try it after October. I did try before, but although in the NW it's far from local to me so I'll welcome its switch to a national show.

British radio is in a mess, and this proves it. Most of these so-called "independent" stations are anything but independent and are all out of the same jelly-mould (just look at "Heart" - yuck) and I think it's quite pathetic that an upcoming national DAB station feels the need to enlist a long-time Radio One has-been to its flagship show. Is it worth listening to? Definitely not!

I'll stick with Planet Rock or Radio Caroline at breakfast.

Smooth's only salvation is that it's on FM so can set the alarm to it!

Ours fires off just before 6.30am and the radio goes off sharply at 7.03am (in order to avoid the self-centred cackle that comes immediately afterwards!).

I don't mind Chris Evans. Laughing You should change the dial.

Mark, if you read my post (above) very, very carefully - yes, I mean very carefully - you'll discover that I don't change the dial but I actually switch the device off. The clue is in my statement "the radio goes off sharply at 7.03am".

I was on the road a lot when Bates was on R1 doing "Our Tune" in the 80s. It was always good for a laugh!!!

It was certainly a thing of the 1980s, but exactly when it started I'm not sure.

I know what you mean. Why don't you retune at 7.03am?

Back to Simon Bates it be good if the Golden Hour was introduced?

Because there's nothing I want to listen to on FM and I have to get up anyhow.

If I can remember I don't think Simon every went out on the R1 roadshows? He did do a few outside broadcasts, and can remember watching him presenting his show from a shop window in Croydon.

I think he did the Roadshow but not if it went too far North. We always got Gary Davies or Mark Goodier.

I'll certainly give Simon Bates a try. I've got sick of Chris Evans shouting like a hyperactive schoolboy.

So what's happening to Graham Dene? I first listened to him many moons ago when he started on Capital's breakfast show. I like his style and enjoy listening to Smooth when I'm within range. Can't say Simon Bates does much for me. May have to flick over to Foxy at Magic.

I agree.

I used to think "little" Graham Dene was an excellent presenter.

Why has he been moved on.

Our Tune will return and will be on Breakfast when Simon starts in January. The station if you listen to it, is promoting his show with the our tune theme.

Sounds like a good reason not to listen

I can't for the life of me understand why they can't just stick with Lynn Parsons
She's a far more appropriate presenter for 2011

.... which can therefore be summed up in a single word: "Boring".

Our Tune? OMG! Rolling Eyes I will therefore NEVER tune into Simon's show. I don't even need to think about it now. Phew!
