I just watched this. Paul Goresh (the photographer who snapped Mark Chapman getting his album signed by Lennon) could be a cool chainstore Santa with his bushy white beard!
All of the information had previously appeared in Uncut on the 70th anniversary of Lennon's birth. But it was well-presented and Andy Peebles was a good interviewee.
However, the announcer butting in over the end credits ruined the atmosphere (the footage of Lennon and Ono waltzing in New York with 'Love' playing) !

Peebles was the last person ever to interview Lennon for broadcast, and I recall him saying that he was told of Lennon's death on his return flight back to London. I still have cassette copies of the Andy Peebles interview he did for Radio 1 which was serialised the folowing year. I must dig them out.
I can remember perfectly getting up for work, switching on the radio as I made a cup of tea and hearing the shocking news. I can picture my wife's face told her the news.

Such practices are not only disrespectful to the programme-maker but also rude and patronising to audiences. I wish they wouldn't do it. |

I remember hearing it on the Radio 1 news 8'clock I think, as I was on day off. Then I went to the hairdressers and the radio was on and it was being discussed.

I was only nine when he was shot but can i ask would he still be an "icon" today if he was still alive?Yes he wrote some good stuff but he also wrote some trash and his career was on the wane when he was shot

Not sure Little Pieces.
I wasn't a real fan of John and to a certain degree any of the solo Beatles. Some of Paul's stuff I like but not all. IMHO they were best as a foursome.

I've just been listening to my own "John Lennon Playlist" that I compiled a long time ago in iTunes and, even though I firmly believe that the music of the Fab Four has never ever been rivalled I think he was in the process of producing some of his best ever solo music at the time that he was murdered.
Even though "Double Fantasy" has a load of Yoko's crap on it, it also has some real gems from Lennon himself. "Watching The Wheels", "Woman" and "(Just like) Starting Over" being just three. And then there's earlier stuff like "Number 9 Dream"............. marvellous stuff. "Instant Karma", "Power To The People", it just goes on.
Lennon was best when he sang from the soul (which was most of the time). Just listen to "Yer Blues" or "Glass Onion" from the Beatles White Album - it doesn't get better.
Aaaah. It all takes me back. I'm just grateful that I lived to experience it all at the time that it was so current. |

His career was certainly not 'on the wane' when he was murdered, little pieces. From 1976-79 he was unproductive, but I believe his career was taking off again in 1980 when Double Fantasy was produced.
Yes he did write some Yoko inspired trash but so did Macca (Frog Chorus?). |

They wouldn't have lasted long on Strictly...
I feel this would have been handled better by the BBC...I could have done without the doctor in the ER telling us, in gory detail, his recollections of that fateful night...
