I would prefer Zoe Ball to Ken Bruce. It's his squaking that gets me

And yet this fella praises Chris Evans. If that's not 'squaking' then I don't know what is!

Assuming you mean "squawking", I'd say that Zoe Ball must surely win hands-down with no competition (well, apart from Evans' incessant and mindless cackle and Alan Carr's......er...... everything). Ken Bruce "squawking"? How on earth did you arrive at that observation?

I don't know, it's just his constant vocal inflections & attempts to be funny.
I did used to listen to chris evans & enjoy his show, but I find him too manic for me these days & havn't listened to evans for some time

Maybe you just don't like Scots accents, because that is all his vocal inflections are.

IMHO he has a very listenable voice and accent.

Yes, me too Helen. He's certainly more bearable than the positively unbearable Zoe "Have I told you about my kids?" Ball. It's just a shame that the music Ken has to play is so chronic.

I endured about 5 minutes of her this morning in the bathroom.. and yes, she was babbling away about her husband and how he likes Strictly Come Dancing.. how anybody can listen to her high speed dribble is beyond me..

It was some noisy guy on Breakfast on Smooth this morning. So I switched back to the peace & tranquility of Chris Evans! Surprised

Clive you are talking about Pat Sharpe and yes I agree he is nowhere near as good as Lynn Parsons

Still much preferable to Radio 2 at that time of day though Smile

Lynn was preferable to Pat but both are infinitely better than Evans.

I agree & I could no longer listen to him on a regular basis. I think he was much better on Drivetime. I really used to enjoy that show

I used to enjoy Drivetime when John Dunn, then Johnnie Walker presented it. Thankfully I can enjoy it again with Simon Mayo at the helm.

Question is whether Smooth would have allowed the very moving letter read by Sue Johnstone and the song that followed to be broadcast at peak listening times.

I only really started listening to R2 when Johnnie Walker started broadcasting on the station regularly so I never listened to John Dunn even though he was a very fine radio broadcaster (didn't he just have the perfect "radio voice"?).

I tend not to listen (and the only if I'm out in the car) because I don't like the silly phone-in stuff he does, but in view he's certainly miles better than the idiot who assaulted our ears and our intelligence in the slot before!

Gosh wasn't that superb, it brought a tear to my eye.

It wouldn't have been on Smooth.

I thought CE was good in the drivetime slot, I could cope with him then, and on Saturdays before that BUT not at Breakfast time. Very Happy

Simon Mayo to me is just bland, and has just recycled his old Radio 1 stuff and some of CEs stuff with no enthusiasm Rolling Eyes

I used to enjoy John Dunn, and the mystery voice Very Happy

Have to agree, he was bland and boring on R1 as well.

Sort of agree, but only for the first 12 months, as I quite liked the new improved almost humble Chris Evans, but quickly he has reverted to version 1.1, which I can't stand.

Smooth should appeal to me, but until they get it nationally on FM for use in car, I don't think I'll bother (not sure about the naff ad's). So at both ends of the day my commute soundtrack is my Ipod with TA switched on.

Sorry I can't agree about Simon Mayo

I think he did an excellent show on Radio 1 and has brought its best features to Radio 2 whilst keeping some reasonable items from the old Evans Drivetime show

His interaction with fellow presenters is always respectful and considerate and although I get to listen only occasionally I think his is one of the best shows on the network

I totally agree Ruddlescat. I think Simon Mayo's Drivetime is one of the best programmes on Radio 2. He comes across as a very decent chap.

I didn't know Simon from Radio 1 so can't comment. I think the show has established itself really well and in many ways gone back to the old ways of Drivetime with JW and John Dunn before him. It's keeps the old grey matter working as well!

I used to like Simon Mayo's Radio One breakfast show. It was here that he started the "Confessions" spot and they were always funny - I remember occasions when Simon was crying with laughter to the point where he couldn't speak when reading listeners' confessions. The one involving the pet hamster taking a flight in the cockpit of a radio-controlled aircraft only to disappear out of range is the one that sticks in my mind.

It doesn't sound the same at Drivetime, somehow.

Oh come on Colin the Confession was hilarious today by the guy who invited his attractive love interest round for Christmas dinner but could not find any Turkeys so he got hold of a half eaten bird free from two blokes in a pub and warmed up the carcass which his girlfriend absolutely loved and she obviously thought he was a gourmet cook

What she didn't know was that the carcass had been half eaten by the previous owners dog who had dragged it round the floor before getting its teeth into the juicest bits
Needless to say he didn't get forgiven as it would seem to be a case of him creating a serious health hazard but it was very funny

I'm willing to accept that it might have been, it's just that I don't go out of my to listen. Still, anything (yes anything) is better than Evans in that slot.

I thought the most horrific thing about the "Turkey Confession" was that the confessor didn't eat any of the turkey himself.

Yes I don't think I would have forgiven him and its not really surprising he never heard anything further from that poor lady

Still a very funny story though
I once sent in a confession to the show when it was on Radio 1 but I'm not going to tell the full story here as it might get me into trouble
Suffice it to say it involved substituting a copy of the Good Pub Guide for what should have been the Bible
You can work the rest out for yourselves Shocked

Colin I'll have to think about that but this gives me an idea for a great new thread

Why don't you start a thread for Father Colin's confessional or I suppose I could start the Reverend Ruddles confessional box or we could do a joint one and see what mirky secrets lurk in the memories of members of this usually whiter than white forum

I think we could give Mr Mayo a run for his money Smile

Unfortunately, Rick Wakeman is on Planet Rock at that time (and Planet Rock is much, much better than Sickly Smooth!).

Mark, that really is old news

I pointed out that fact on the Lynn Parsons thread several weeks ago when I received an e mail from the Head of Programmes at Smooth telling me of the position

Sometimes I wonder what's the point of bothering to post if people don't take any notice Sad

A bit like his R2 show, but then that's the way R2 is going overall, turning into 80/90s R1 Rolling Eyes
