PostPosted: Wed Dec 08, 2010 11:53 am    Post subject: Ruddlescat's Think Link Reply with quote

As some of you who visit Mallets Mallet may know I recently mentioned that I organise a weekly music quiz at my local pub based on an old Radio One format used by DLT many years ago called the Think Link

Basically I play three tracks in succession which in some way have a subject link between them either in the song title of the artists name and the audience has to guess the subject matter of the link and the first person to do so wins a prize

However that's the relatively easy bit because I then invite the audience to guess what will be the fourth and final track in the link which is obviously much harder and anyone clever enough to guess the correct answer wins a magnum of Champagne but this has happened only once in the last three years

By way of an experiment and for your entertainment I thought I would have a go at trying to see whether the competition format would work on our forum subject to setting out a few basic rules so all forum members can participate on a fair and equal basis

Firstly the link must be contained in either the song title of artists name and the track must have been released in the UK within the last 50 years on vinyl cassette CD or download format and preferably as a single

Alternate spellings of words may be used to create the link but the word selected must sound like the correctly spelled version so for example if the subject link was about the subject of jewellry a track by say Jasper Carrott would be acceptable to establish the word 'carat' in the link

If another forum member correctly guesses the link from the first three posted tracks then any forum member can have a go at guessing the fourth track in the link but they need to come up with both the artist and song title and if successful that person gets to post a new link but if they decline to do so or fail to do so within 24 hours then any other forum member may do this on a first come first served basis

The original poster of the link must check this thread regularly and immediately advise if a correct answer is received and it goes without saying that this format relies heavily on the honesty and integrity of individual posters so for example there must be no disclosure of any details to friends via private e mails and equally there must be no bias against anyone on the forum who the poster may not get on with for example by the poster changing the original answer so as to prejudice that person as against others

For the benefit of you technical wizzards members may if they wish post audio or video links for their choosen tracks rather than using written postings. Now for an example to make things clearer from a link I used last weekend

Here Comes the Sun The Beatles
Miss Grace The Times
Mirror Man Human League

The subject Link is fairly obviously National Newspapers but what is the fourth track in the link
It could be a number of tracks which would all fit the bill but the actual correct answer is

Typical Male Tina Turner

Hope that makes everything clear and I don't know how well this will work on line but I'll start you off with the first set of tracks

Let the Music Play Barry White
Mouldy Old Dough Lieutenant Pigeon
When I'm Dead and Gone McGuinness Flint

Answers firstly for the subject link and good luck

Schiz you've got to work out the link from the three posted tracks as in the example I gave

Once that has been achieved then people can try to guess the fourth track using the link established from the first three
Sorry if that was not clear as I said I have no idea how this will work on line as I'm more used to doing it with live tracks before a live audience

Well done Schiz you got the link so now you and others can attempt to guess the fourth track in the sequence
Not Rhondda unfortunately but you're on the right lines
Remember the answer might be slightly cryptic but you are looking for another Welsh place name contained within either a song title or the artists name

Nice try Becky but that's stretching things a bit far
I did this link down the pub a couple of weeks ago and I thought you might be interested in the wrong answers I got which range from the quite intelligent to the sublime -

ABERGAVENNY Marty Wilde
The Bells of RHYMNEY The Byrds
HAY Baby Bruce Channel
The Wind beNEATH my Wings Westlife
Sidesaddle Russ CONWAY
The Day We went to BANGOR Fiddler's Dram
CHIRKateta Abba
Relax Frankie Goes to HOLYWELL
Hotel Room The Edgar BROUGHTON Band
And that's just a sample but back to business you still need to find the correct answer Smile

Great tracks Ron all of them but unfortunately not the correct answer

There are loads more tracks which fit the bill so keep trying and as someone famously once said don't have nightmares Sad

Is there a Newquay in Wales?

I don't want to be pedantic but does not the person who gets the link in the first place, ie Welsh towns, not get a virtual glass of champers as well? Still, at least I needn't set the next one!

Yes, New Quay is on the west coast, between Cardigan and Aberystwyth

Ron am I right in saying that the fourth track does not include the word John

eg John, I'm Only Dancing
Big John

Or in the Artists name

eg Jon Kongos
Jon and Vangelis

Yes, you're right, it doesn't include John, just the surname

Having re-read your rules I realise that I have made it too difficult, because it's an album track, albeit from a best-selling album of 2003, by a band which could have been named after a Paul McCartney song.

Thanks for that Ron - I would never have got that one but its a really good track

When I drew up the rules I did originally intend to restrict the choices to only singles because some Album tracks can be fairly obscure especially if they are not played regularly or even occasionally on radio and the intention is that people should have a reasonable chance of working out the answer but they might have to stretch their brains a little

Never mind though, as I said with something new there are always teething problems so as nobody got your fourth link do you want to set a fresh link or would you prefer me to do it

By the way Schiz sorry you only get the champagne if you guess the fourth track but I should have offered you a beer for working out the link

How about a virtual pint of Brains SA - very appropriate being a Welsh beer for a man who obviously has considerable brain power
I believe you can get a good pint of it in The Ship in Newquay Very Happy

I've never heard of Jet! They sound like Oasis. (I hope I don't sound like an out of touch High Court judge when I say that).

Ruddles, now I know where New Quay is I will gladly have a virtual pint there!

I'd rather have a non-virtual pint of Brains. I first tasted it during a visit to the Felinfoel brewery when I used to visit Swansea University as a student and I developed a distinct taste for its distinctive taste!

Are you sure about that Colin?

Brains Beers are and always have been brewed in Cardiff whereas the Felinfoel Brewery is a completely seperate business best known for brews like Double Dragon and Celtic Gold and is based in Llanelli

I couldn't see one brewery carrying the beers of a competitor especially in those days but of course there are pubs all over South Wales selling Brains Beers including some in Swansea and Llanelli
I'm a little confused Confused There you are I told you I was can you throw any light on thne situation?

Oh eck, I think you're right. My visits to Swansea were always well-lubricated! Yes, I remember the Felinfoel Brewery but, of course, there's a beer called Felinfoel. We toured several S.Wales breweries in the year or so I frequented the area so it all gets a bit confusing - especially since we "sampled" quite a lot of the produce! Smile

Sorry for the delay in posting the next competition but unfortunately I've been having problems with my internet connection and have been off line for six days thanks to AOL but still I'm looking forward to the compensation

Anyway here goes and I don't think this is too difficult

Ride A White Swan T Rex
Seaside Shuffle Terry Dactyl and the Dinasaurs
Fox on the Run The Sweet

First off give me the link for a virtual beer Smile

Whilst I was fixing a burst pipe this morning I happened to switch on my radio and was amused to note that Richard Allinson seems to have nicked my Think Link quiz at least for this week

After 11am he is playing six tracks with a link but with all due respect to him I don't think his efforts will tax too many overhung festive brains

I mention this because a couple of posters have stated on the Allinson thread that they have had their e mails read out on air a few minutes after sending them

It does make me wonder whether Mr Allinson does read items on this forum so if you are reading this Richard perhaps you could kindly enlighten us

By the way I notice there have been no suggestions for my latest link posted before Christmas so come on you lot Christmas is over so get your brains in gear for 2011 Very Happy

I just hope RA hasn't read my message describing him as desperately dull!

Anyway, an obvious link is animals but I'm sure it's a bit more subtle than that.

True Schiz but that's not the link

I'll give you a little clue, I set this one with Becky in mind and changed one of the tracks I used in the pub version
If nobody gets the link I might tell you the track I left out

If the music isn't from the 50s to the 80s I'd be hopeless at this quiz but I've been scratching my head trying to "see" the link to the three songs.. but today, I noticed there's a link with "Ride", "Shuffle" and "Run".. maybe "Walk" would be the next?
I don't get the "virtual Beer" link either.. Sad unless it's "Hops" Laughing

Santa as you may have gathered I do this quiz live weekly in my local and sometimes at other live events
The person who guesses the link gets a crate of beer but if someone correctly guesses the fourth track I am going to play they win a magnum of champagne

As we are on line unfortunately I have to award virtual pints and virtual glasses of champagne but as you don't drink I could offer you a giant box of virtual chocolates if you are a winner Very Happy
