Well, now that we're past all the christmassy dross I'm listening to R2 for the first time in days and I have to say that Richard Allinson is proving to be more than satisfactory as Ken's stand-in this week.

The music's certainly a LOT better! (As I write, he's playing Elton John's sublime "Rocket Man" with something from the equally sublime "Pet Sounds" album coming up).

And, at 12.00, Johnnie Walker chats to the Davies brothers. Fabulous!

Well RA is CERTAINLY better than ZB as a stand-in, but that's not saying much. He's still too high on the Cheeseometer for my liking. Still, makes us appreciate Ken.

I don't find him cheesy at all, but even if there was a whiff of cheese it would still be preferable to the high volume of dross on R2 currently (think "Evans", "Carr", "Wright" etc). Yes, he's certainly better that Zoe Ball - whom I don't listen to at all - and the music is very good indeed. That's good enough to stop me reaching for the off switch!

Am enjoying Richard doing Ken's slot, shame there isn't room for them both on R2 schedule in daylight or evening hours.

Richard A is one of the worst DJs for talking over the tracks. He's such a poor stand-in at times.

He's not nearly as bad as The Insufferable One in that respect, however! Smile

Anyway, how's a post-Crimbo Rachel today?

As someone who's always disappointed when Ken isn't on I've been enjoying RA's shows. Decent music for a change. Perhaps I'll start a petition to get his old Saturday show back

Oh I dunno about that, Colin, the last ten minutes of Richard's show this morning was just him talking over the tracks- ruined them both- he may as well not have played them.

I'm very well- post-Christmas Smile, feeling a bit fat after eating too much, happy in the main, probably reflecting too much on this last year which is causing a mild blueness to wash over me but just this weekend to get out of the way, then it's back to normal. yay! Smile How's you?

Yep, good thanks. I was a bit fed up immediately before Christmas day because a client didn't credit my business account with a rather large sum of money for a job that was done "in a hurry" back in November, but - hey - that's the price of not having to put up with having a real job! Smile (And it gives those greedy swines at LloydsTSB - did I mention the word "greedy"? - the opportunity to rip me off with excessive overdraft charges!).

Anyway, we went to the pub on Christmas eve and staggered home in the ice at 1.45am, so I managed to drown the blues quite well! (And we bumped into some lovely old friends who we haven't seen for yonks and that was good).

Oh I can always fit into that, Colin, it's one the things that makes housework so much fun. Wink

A pub and friends... sounds like heaven. I seemed to be cooking and washing-up for three days continuously.

Fun indeed. Did I mention the volume of housework that needs doing around here??? Smile

Things are different here; I do the cooking whereas she does the washing-up. Trouble is, she bought a dishwasher (that's a machine, by the way, not a person!) a year ago - so who's got the better deal?

Richard has proved what shows should sound like. I think Bob Shennan should move him to weekday evenings with a music show like he did a few years ago.

Weekday Breakfasts would be better (and better than the gobby idiot who regularly occupies the seat!).

Yes but when he covered for Evans he was too good, so Shennan dare not give him the gig again.

Yes, he was much much better than El Gobbo, and therein lies the problem for Bob "Can Anyone Be As Clueless As Me?" Shennan.

My bedside radio automatically clicked on to "snooze" whilst Alice was on... I wonder why?.. Confused
Let's face it.. anybody, even woolly jumper " I love me" man Allinson, would outshine Evans...

Richard has proven live on air that he doesn't know what a music show should sound like. I think Bob Shennan should give him his P45 and directions to the main door.

That's a trifle harsh, Rach. Richard has his uses - if I wake up in the early hours of Saturday or Sunday morning he sends me back to sleep, almost instantly.

He does know what a music show should sound like.... unfortunately it's a BBC local radio music show of the 1970s, and there are people who like that, especially since most BBC local radio stations today don't have such a animal.

What utter rubbish Rachel is spouting about Richard.

Of course Richard knows what a music show should sound like.

He's been a professional presenter/DJ for over 30 years.

His weekend shows are outstanding examples of enjoyable music entertainment.

Personally, Rachel, I think that's rubbish! In fact, Bob "I'm Just Busking My Way Through This Job" Shennan is the one deserving of Ye Olde P45. He's absolutely useless as Controller, Radio 2.

Listen to the last 15 minutes of yesterday's show- count up the seconds of talking over the tracks in just those 15 minutes- the man is a menace on the airwaves. 30 years- that was just yesterday's show.

How many seconds does Evans talk - nay- shout over records. You could do the same for Wright when he returns. I think both of them are also guilty of being stuck in their respective time-warps.

Evans is irrelevant in this discussion – we’re talking about Allinson and his inability to shut up when music is playing.

Actually, Rachel, I think that Evans is very relevant to this discussion on account of his complete inability to shut up when music is playing, when other people are talking or when other things are occurring that dare to shift the focus away from his own voice.

In fact, Evans just has an inability to shut up! (I sent in a text a while back which read: "Mooooorning Chris. Your presentation style is boring me. Will you please shut up?". I didn't get an on-air acknowledgement!!). Smile

So, in that context, Allinson is the preferred option for me.

There's chatting into a record and then there's chatting IN a record........

There's an art to the first but definitely not to the latter.

I don't mind the first depending on who is doing it of course!

I think Helen's comment is very true and well made

Both Richard and Alex are competent and experienced professionals whose talk is fairly inobtrusive whereas Chris Evans is a presenter of little talent who simply likes the sound of his own voice IMHO of course

OK Rachel, you listen to the Insufferable One at breakfast (the regular presenter, I mean!). If we're assessing presenters purely on their tendancy to talk over music then let's analyse Evans' behaviour.

Come to think of it, we really don't need to! Hands down - he's the worst offender by far. He hates it when music is playing and he's obviously like a cat on hot bricks in anticipation of the next opportunity to open his gob! Smile
