What it is it with radio presenters these days? This morning I listened to Richard Madeley constantly interrupting the 'celeb' gossip woman and ruining the punchline of some tale being told by the sports reporter.

As mentioned on a previous post, Bill Kenwright scarcely let Priscilla Presley finish a sentence before jumping in to correct or top whatever she said, and French and Saunders, apart from spouting unscripted, unstructured drivel at length, seemed unable to let either each other or their guests finish what they were trying to say.

It's rude, irritating and extremely unprofessional in my view. But then.... what do I know... I'm still of the opinion that people presenting radio shows should have some qualifications for doing so.

As Jennifer Saunders said on the trailer for their programme: 'it's a piece of cake this radio business isn't it?'

I can understand her reasons for thinking so. Rolling Eyes

I know exactly what you mean, Minx. Have to say it doesn't bother me with F&S, but drives me mad on the Today prog where nobody ever gets to finish what they are saying. As for " I'm still of the opinion that people presenting radio shows should have some qualifications for doing so..." try telling the R2 Controller that, as he clearly disagrees.

Richard Madeley was notorious for being unable to engage brain before speaking on TV - French & Saunders suffered from severe self indulgence when they let go of Raw Sex and Kathy Burke.

Business as usual then!

Seems the only criteria to getting radio show these days is to be able to speak incessantly at totally the wrong moments and over anyone else who dares to open their mouth. Rolling Eyes

Shall we all get together and send in a tape? I'm sure it would be better than what we've had over this Christmas!

Helen, the BBC has laid off all those experienced technicians and production staff who would know what to do with a tape. Nowadays, if you hand a 10" NAB spool to a tech and say "Can you put that on a Studer and run a line-up, please?" they'll look at you like you're from another planet!

Best be a good MP3 file, therefore! Emailed, as well. Then they'll lose it.

Yes I think they threw all the decent stuff away when they moved to the new studios. The first time I went to the JV show there were 2 large reel to reel decks in the studio. I remember JV referring to them with Ken during that time, Something about having to splice tapes together before submitting a report. Tape splicers - those were the days! Smile

Yep, Studers, they would be. Smile

I still have my EMITAPE 1/4" splicing block and three rolls of coloured leader tape dating from the late 70s. All BBC broadcast journalism trainees had to know how to record, playback and edit 1/4" using Uher 4000 portables and studio-based Studer machines - often very quickly! These days they all use portable digital recorders but somehow manage to capture inferior quality sound on their reports!

That said, mixing was a pain and everything had to be done in real time. I much prefer digital multitrack editing on a Mac!

Writing the above prompted me to go off in search of a Studer 2-track 1/4" studio master machine. Here's one on eBay

Trouble is, where would I put it - and how long before Mrs B. discovered it? Smile

Not the radio but I remember Alesha Dixon saying a similar thing about her TV job on the judging panel of Strictly... Rolling Eyes

She needs interrupting permanently, I usually use the OFF button when she comes on Rolling Eyes
