Residents in a Arkansas city got a bizarre New Year's surprise on Saturday when they woke up to find their neighborhood covered with thousands of dead birds that appeared to have fallen from the sky.

I'm interested in the fact that you're (not "your", by the way) interested enough to post it here! Rolling Eyes

Didn't you know that this is an old Arkansas tradition revived by Bill Clinton when he was Governor of the State in the 1980s

Every New Year instead of eating Turkey as Americans do on Thanksgiving the State Governor hires a light plane and drops thousands of recently killed Blackbirds whilst the residents are asleep and then on the following morning the residents each have to try to gather up sixty Blackbirds and bake them in a pie

Slices of pie are then distributed around the city of Little Rock to the poor and needy including everyone eligible for food stamps and locally the occasion is nicknamed St Williams Day

Apparently there is a lot of argument in Arkansas at the moment as the present Governor not being a fan of Mr Clinton wishes to move the event to April 1st for some reason Confused

I almost posted that explanation of fireworks yesterday as I've seen it happen when we were in Florida some years ago.

There was a corporate display on the beach where we were staying and we'd seen it being set up during the day so walked along beachside to the hotel and watched it from there. We walked back to our hotel street side and all along the pavement and on the road were hundreds of dead birds, an absolutely horrible sight. The firework display was the loudest I've seen and 20 minutes later it was obviously the cause of death of these birds.

Reading Becky's link I think the theory of them flying low to avoid explosions and hitting power lines could well be the case. Overhead power lines are far more common in the US than here and the road where we saw the dead birds had them at the side. We thought that when we saw them.
