The new series starts on Sunday. Hooray! Just what I need on dark Sunday evenings in winter.

Is that the place where the sun always shines, where the world has an orange tint and everything is out of focus?

Ah yes - my wife will be watching!

Do you think they're working up a romance between Dorcas and Gabriel?

The current series ends on 13 February and it's apparently not returning. They want to go out whilst they're ahead, we're told.

That is such a shame. It's ideal for a gentle Sunday evening viewing, pretty to look at, oddball characters, daft storylines and all.

It was an interesting point about Queenie's homemade lace being superseded by the cheaper machine-made variety, as that is something which was covered in Michael Portillo's excellent railway programme recently.

Yes Eileen, I found that very interesting because my first job was in a linen shop and we sold all sorts of lace. Beautiful handmade lace from Belgium and Switzerland and also machine lace from Nottingham. I felt quite sad for Queenie because until then I hadn't realised the effect it all had on people livelihoods.
