I've just been looking at the BBC Commissioning website, and found that BBC Radio 2 is looking for a "full network imaging package".

The current package has been in use since 1997, with updates in 2003 and 2010. So it'll be interesting to hear something completely new!

Quote:
It is anticipated the full package will consist of;
1 x News
1 x Travel Bed and Tag
20 x Image Ramps (approx 20 seconds duration)
5 x Christmas IDs (approx 10 seconds duration)

Quote:
TO BID FOR THIS PROJECT
To be considered for this project, please compile an audio CD or mp3 of demo idents for;
1. BBC Radio 2 News In
2.Ken Bruce Show Open
3.Mike Harding Folk and Roots Show Open
Each ident should be pitched 2 ways; first using the existing BBC Radio 2 sonic logo, second
using a new sonic logo of your own composition for “BBC Radio 2”. If you wish to evolve
our existing logo, we will also accept these additional versions in your pitch.

Pointers;
-It is highly recommended that you listen to the Ken Bruce and Mike Harding
programmes and reflect their presentation and musical styles in your pitch.
-The News In should be instrumental.
-Each show open ident should feature vocals.
-Whilst we don’t expect to hear real instrumentation at the demo stage, we do expect
to hear vocals which best reflect what your company can provide.
-We’re looking for a rich and anthemic sound.
-The composition should observe the individual feature/programme/genre but retain a
uniform feel.

So they're still looking for sung station IDs as they have now, and a wide range of station IDs, as they have now.

Groove Addicts have recently updated the stations jingles. Traffic jingle and new jingles which include ID ones for Janice Long, Simon Mayo and Jeremy Vine. Maybe they should use Wise Buddah.

They can't just "use Wise Buddah" due to competitive tendering rules. And anyhow, maybe the station will get something new instead of variations on the same old 70s-style rubbish.

About time. Wonder if JAM will submit a bid, they've done one or two jingles for the station recently-isn't 'Weekend Wogan' theirs?

Only 27 jingles. Gone are the days when JAM would deliver a package with dozens of jingles. The first Groove Addicts must have had about 100 cuts.

I think the point is that its time for a change. I'm not sure I want a Wise Buddah jingle opening every hour of Radio 2 - I'm not keen on the Chris Evans jingles they did. Although the Johnnie Walker SOT70s ones aren't bad.

It might be that the 20 Image Ramps they're looking for will include various versions of each - several DJ/presenter IDs, a generic version, and an instrumental or shorter version.

Don't forget that it's easy to make specific variants as needed these days, especially where it's just a V/O namecheck required. Just open the master file in Pro Tools and off you go. We've come a long way since PAMS carts - even if the jingles aren't as good.

So, finally Radio Two are to get a complete new package of jingles, applications to produce this package end on February 5th but the brief is not so simple . . . sure it’s a normal way of putting a project like this out to tender but, there’s a catch, in that part of the process states that the BBC will keep control of the audio once it is produced. Well, this might pose a problem for those companies that would usually put this out to worldwide syndication, such as TM and JAM, so it will be interesting to see just who will respond to this tender.
