Thanks Clive. I'm looking forward to hearing favourites from my teenage years including, I hope, Dickie Valentine.

I've memories from being a very young child of tunes played on the radio and my parent's records played on an enormous radiogram that was in the corner of the dining room.

Think I'll record them on the Sky box.

My dad has loads of 50s LP records and he has asked me to transfer them into the modern digital domain (which, as far as he's concerned, is CDs!!). It will be interesting to listen again to the actual physical records that I remember hearing as a child on the old Marconi radiogram. There's something about vinyl that - when played on properly set-up equipment - sounds good, so it should be an interesting exercise.

Great singer as was Matt Monore...saw Matt as a very young child in Summer season in Bournemouth but sadly I know we had to leave before he finished his performance as we had to catch a bus back to the hotel/guest house and they stopped running after 11pm(I think)

Now we'd have just ordered a taxi or stayed in a hotel nearer the theatre.

Oh how I envy you listening to all those records Colin...

Matt Monro's brother (now sadly deceased) lived 300 metres from me and did so for many years. I was only told of this by a friend who lived opposite who got sick to death of Matt's records being played at full volume early on Sunday mornings!

Laughing Colin...

Would that I could afford to raid Amazon and all the great 50's tracks that seem not to be played on radio but they have available. So are never heard.

I'm still sure that as Radio 2 has Sounds of the 60's and 70's they could manage even if it was produced as a series of 6-8 programmes at a time one devoted to the 50's. And include well known and lesser known material.

We do get 50's music amongst the music played on Clare Teal, Russell Davies and David Jacobs shows but it's not signposted just there because many of the albums the music is taken from were produced at that time.

I'm sure that this new series will be worth a listen for the interviews and stories and the music too but trying to squeeze so much into an hour(well approx 56 minutes after the news and trailers for other programmes are removed)the music may be cut short and I suspect the most well known songs will be played.

The 50's were more diverse music wise than many realise big band, rock and roll, ballads, crooners and all types of music that had gone before and when the charts started such a variety rubbed shoulders with each other.

There was a Sounds of the 50s series many years ago, presented by the late Ronnie Hilton. Yes, plenty of reason to try another one.

I liked that series...

Two local commercial stations in the North carried a nightly programme and the ratings were good...for a variety of reasons(one being the presenter being convicted of something)

Instead of getting in a new presenter they dropped the programme altogether and went the same way as just about every commercial station in the country.

Some BBC local stations had some decent programmes on a similar model but they've all but disappeared now.

The nearest we have to these are Radio 2 9pm-midnight Sundays or John Bennett's Sunday Club(BBC Radio Ulster 10pm-midnight Sundays)and String Of Pearls BBC Radio Wales Sundays 9.30am-10.30am but these are not exclusively aimed at 50's music.

There are some wonderful cd's or mp3 downloads over there and many I would die for.

I ordered(I mixed them in with other music on shuffle for Mum on an mp3 player)150 christmas songs and it only cost me £5.99

One series is excellent for known and unknown songs in good quality sound is backline but its a big series and they are £8.49 each but they have 50 songs per album(but they are not all 50's music)

I must order some whilst I have some money...

I have to listen to it properly but what I did hear sounded very good and I am sure at the start Desmond actually references his series by associating with Sounds Of The 50's which I believe he said had not been on the station for many years...

It has to be around 15 years I would think since Ronnie Hilton's series was on air...Time for it to be resurrected.

Nit just for oldies in the audience but to stop the music being forgotten and for younger people to discover it and give them a more rounded musical knowledge.

What a thoroughly delightful and musical programme, I heard so many well-remembered recordings by singers and performers who must never be forgotten and who could be enjoyed by a newer audience of listeners who are able and willing to appreciate beautiful popular music well-performed and well-arranged, but rarely heard on Radio 2 these days.

Howard Keel, Johnnie Ray, Alma Cogan, Eddie Calvert, Larry Adler, Steve Conway, Julie Andrews, The Chordettes etc. were included last night and there were also interviews with David Jacobs, Teddy Johnson and Larry Adler.

Desmo certainly packed a lot into this first programme. Smile

And that is why I like Sunday Radio as I get much of that between 9pm-midnight with Russell, David and Clare. But I also hunt out String of Pearls on Radio Wales and The Sunday Club on Radio Ulster and also BBC Tees. And I have all that kind of music on an mp3 player for Mum and on the computer too. Otherwise it's hard to find.

I hope that I can catch the other five in this series.

On Sunday past we tuned into BBC Tees and a technical fault meant that the programme did not happen but many still do not understand why the presenter did not switch to the alternative studio as that was working and someone was playing CD's and able to use the mike. It was suggested it might be that the presenter had taken ill(they said not)or it was recorded but as you can text and e-mail in for a mention not likely.

So listeners are baffled, maybe we'll get a reason this Sunday.

Even a programme not exclusivley full of 50's music could work as long as its an easy listening programme, what is called easy listening today is not what I usually class as being so...

Speaking of which there is a great new album out from Johnny Mathis recorded when he was 75 years old and both he, the choice of songs and the arrangements are fantastic so such music is still being produced. Hopefully David Jacobs or Desmond will play a track soon.

Will have to use 'Listen Again' (why do I prefer that phrase to iPlayer??) as I'm still watching TV at 10, Silent Witness last night.

Had a peep at the playlist and Larry Adler sparks memories of an interview with him by John Dunn on Drivetime. Must be 20 years ago, but I can hear his voice still. I think he was a bit of a communist?

Will listen and enjoy I'm sure.

Helen,
Larry admitted sympathy to the Communist Party but denied being a member. But he certainly was politically motivated and had many opinions to impart when interviewed and not always about music. Razz

I think you'll enjoy the programme when you listen...

Gidy

Re BBC Tees I have reason to beleive the regular presenter of Vintage Vinyl is away just now so I suspect last Sunday's show was recorded and maybe it was that recording that broke down.

Thanks for that Tireecoll, That would make more sense.
Makes me laugh why they don't admit that some shows are not live.

I guessed a show over Christmas was recorded.

Not being honest sometimes causes more problems than just owning up.

Colin Bunyan who presents it works during the week and only does the one programme so always coming in on Sunday(even if he enjoys doing it)means you never have a weekend to do anything.

Cheers Wink

Good mix of music with a wide appeal. Teddy Johnson sounded a sprightly 91-year old didn't he. Must be about 20 years or so since he was last on the station, sitting in for Desmond on his Sunday lunchtime show.
Also remember Larry Adler narrating a R2 documentary series 'The American Way of Laughs' back in the 80s.

Well I can bring it to life temporarily. Here's 15 mins or so of the show from January 1992.

I'll see if I can listen or download Andy(this pc is a bit iffy about such things)Others will enjoy I am sure...

A certain someone used to criticise older presenters on another forum or two but often they can run rings around the youngsters and you can tell they enjoy their work and they have knowledge of the music they play.

I know in today's radio they like to get straight into a programme but I still liked it when a dj/presenter used to have their own signature tunes and so its good that some of the shows at night still have them.

You remember Larry's series, so do I Very Happy

Oh its good Minx but as said earlier we need a programme of 50's music on Radio 2 and it needs to take in the popular and neglected music of the time.

Even if it is not weekly but done in blocks of 6-8 programmes at a time like Bill Kenwright's Golden Years.

FEM,
I'm not perfect but I hope that if ever I criticise it is done constructively and I can find a reason for what I say. Even should my views differ with someone else's. Humour does help too.

It is a pity because of previous problems and also the closure of the messagebaords at the BBC there are few places where you can ask questions about radio, offer praise or suggest ideas so even if you want to be positive it is difficult.

So many radio greats still sound good and could be brought back to do specials and series...

The other year Tom Edwards was given a couple of specials on the BBC station serving Norwich(it sounded good)Keith Skues is still going strong even though they keep putting his show later in the schedule and cut it back, before it closed Colin Berry had a good show carried over some local BBC stations playing music of a wide range(dropped unfortunately)all could be given work on radio 2 or used in some way...it's a pity just to lose or under use the talent that is out there.

Yes GG, I'm all for constructive criticism. If any of us went as far as some were allowed to on the R2 MB ... well, we just don't.

A great start to the series ....nice chat and great songs

Teddy Johnson's voice is still a good radio one, belying his 92 years....loved his choice of Howard Keel singing My Defens/ces Are Down..not one you hear that often, if at all, on the radio....nice little story attached to it too

David Jacobs sounded as if he were a little in love with Alma Cogan.....Smile

Hearing the song from The Boyfriend reminded me of seeing a college production of it that my son was in....never has been a favourite musical of mine I'm sorry to say .. very few memorable songs which sort of defeats the object.....looks good though....Wink

Any fans on here?

Desmond has got the art of presenting programmes such as this down to a fine one..

Nice summary of the programme Becky...my knowledge of The Boyfriend is fleeting and I only know it because of the film version starring Twiggy and Tommy Tune which I haven't seen.

I had it varified by Mum that as a child I saw Alma who was in summer season in Bournemouth(I don't remember)but I have memory(and this could be totally wrong)that she and Ken Dodd were in the window of a shop together(I assume doing some publicity stunt for their show?)

We saw just about anyone who was anyone for many decades in that town.

Really enjoyed listening to this. Teddy Johnson sounded incredibly good, younger than David Jacobs, who did indeed sound as though he had a huge crush on Alma Cogan. Looking forward to next week's show.

How often can you say that about R2? Sad

Teddy did sound very clear.

It's a wonder that Pete Murray hasn't been called in as a guest seeing he worked on Luxy, the Light Programme and Radio 2 for many years and was around in the 50's.

All these kind of people could've been used for years and are/were ideal for a 50's music programme and also because they can talk about the times because they were around.

Just as Blackburn and Walker and the like were around in the 60's and 70's...

An utterly delightful hour. If the remaining 5 are as good as this, we're in for a treat.

Wonder if they've got Pete Murray and/or Brian Matthew lined up for any of the shows?

And with all radio talk closed down on the BBC website(even if it kills the nasty stuff)and avoids them doing a lot of monitoring...it also means you cannot praise something either.

The best idea was to have left a radio board at the POV boards where you talk about all BBC Radio, now if anyone tries to mention radio all threads are closed down double quick but you can still talk about the BBC about television, a policy as clear as mud...

I wonder which other artists are lined up...there was a trailer today for programme two but I missed it...

Well, you certainly couldn't ignore her but I'll be interested to see how much she is seen of being important to the 50's... Razz

I only know of a couple of songs of her's, Santa Baby and An Old Fashioned Millionaire.

I'm digressing but I did mention earlier that I listen to a BBC Tees programme on Sunday afternoon as it has some music similar to what Desmond plays and others on Sunday night, it has music from the 40's, 50's, 60's and 70's and the problems the BBC experienced last week.

It was obvious to me today it was a recorded show this week but it played out until 3.30pm and then they had the same problem as last week Razz Shocked but this time the presenter who filled in the vacated space couldn't get her music to play and again they still refuse to say that the intended show is recorded for the minute.

But after 5-8 minutes she finally managed to get some music playing but I doubt they'll get back to him.

The system seems to need some major repair work and money pumped into it. I wonder if this the show that failed last week or another?

This leads me to ask does anyone remember any major breakdowns on Radio 2 and how they dealt with them.

I know one of Desmond's normal shows failed once and we lost 10-15 minutes and they just kept Simon Mayo on a little while longer.

I may be imagining it but it seems the more modern technology is used breakdowns happen more often...

Sorry to go off on one...

BTW it just gets sillier...the presenter who is on air has finally said she is sitting in for the original presenter, then at 4pm they put his programme on again and instead of starting it off from where it would've been...

They are playing the first hour again which we had at 2pm Rolling Eyes

Back to Desmond's Iconic 50's...

Teddy Johnson spoke of Winifred Atwell on the show and played one of her tunes ....on Desert Island Discs this week Betty Driver (she of the hotpot in Coronation Street) chose the same one... Black and White Rag...to take with her to her desert island ...she and Winifred were great friends...
