It's good to hear Timmy doing POTPs now - especially since he played the whole of Fleetwood Mac's "Oh Well Part One" and not just the first bit. Back in ye good olde days of Radio One DJs always dropped the level and gabbled over it (just like Evans or Wright would do today).

Yes its good to hear the track in full

I remember when TB was in his prime on Radio 1 he was one of the worst offenders for fading and talking over records

Perhaps leopards really can change their spots of more likely he's been told to behave Smile

Yes, he inherited the habit from his days on Radios Caroline and London in the pirate era. I remember that he always used to voice-over the intros right up to the first lyric. What really bugged me, though, was the way that "Oh Well Part One" was always faded out completely as soon as the slow section started. Perhaps this was due to a different Radio Edit being supplied.

I thought you were drunk with the opening title, Colin. John Peel did used to refer him too that name.

I enjoyed POTP as usual. 1969 is always a good year.

Yes I was pleased TB played all of Oh Well Part One. I love Peter Green's slow guitar and the flute? solo at the end, which continues on into Part Two of course.

He still shows his contempt for The Beedles though. He could have played Something or Come Together, instead of that awful Durham Town rubbish by Roger Whittaker.

Incidentally, has anyone pointed out to Mr Whittaker that Durham lies on the River Wear, not The Tyne!

maybe Tony doesn't talk over them because he's not there to do so...
if the show is voice tracked and they slot the music in later

and what's played on the show and probably everything that's said bar the odd ad lib is selected and written by Phil Swern, the producer

Recorded as live until the new year, when the show will be live. So he will play all the songs in full. I heard him saying before he left Smooth " He doesn't like presenting pre-recorded shows"

The show is definitely recorded "as live" on a weekday. Blackburn has made it clear that this is so in a radio interview and also in print. At the moment, the show can't be done live because Radio 2 studios are in use by other networks over the weekend because of construction work taking place at BH/Western House but he has made it clear that he will be doing POTP live in January.

Also, I don't think that a stalwart of the 1960s pirate ships needs his links written by a producer, somehow.

thanks for the info Colin and Mark

interesting the shows are 'as live' , of course i hoped that would be the case. i stand corrected
as for what TB says on the show, i hope he really does a free hand in what he says between records... i don't doubt his ability to do so after 40+ years broadcasting

I enjoyed the show today and will look forward to it going out live in the New Year!

Just imagine............I have listened to and enjoyed two shows today, most days during the week I have hardly had Radio 2 on at all.

'Durham Town' got used a lot in Julian Clary's 'Terry & Julian' series.

Not that Clary's from there - he just liked Roger Whittaker.

Get Dancing is indeed a good song, one you never hear on the radio.

I enjoyed POTP as usual, though I always miss the second hour as I'm out Saturday afternoons. This week in 1974 had some good ones: I Can Help (love the story about the dog!), the excellent Ms Grace, and a good Xmas song, Lonely This Christmas by Mud.

And Gary Glitter got ignored again!

Yes, it was good to hear that Disco song again... and me, an underground fan at the time.. tsk tsk..
Whilst browsing Youtube the other night, I had a desire to hear "Loop-di-Love" again after many years.. although I couldn't remember whether it was "Shag" or the "J.Bastos" version I liked... probably "Shag"..

oops.. Jonathan King and Gary Glitter mentioned in the same thread.. Confused

Am I going completely mad or did I just hear Tony saying we were going back exactly 40 years to 1973?

If he is doing the show live and can't get basic maths right perhaps he should stick to prerecording it Sad

From 29th January when Tony celebrates his birthday it will be his first live transmission. According to the press release he will have two surprises in store. The year will be 1906 when Tony first broadcast on the radio Laughing - ( 1966 - 1977 )

He's probably suffering from senile dementia Very Happy

It's nice to know that you now read your text before hitting the Submit button! Rolling Eyes

By the way, what's with the "1966-1977" dates? You mean he stopped broadcasting in 1977?
