It was fairly safe and fairly bland- I think we should see how she develops the show over the next week week or two then see how she's getting on.
PS: Mark- when will you finish welcoming Vanessa to R2?

Which definition do you mean, Colin?

a. Of a dull grayish to yellowish brown.
b. Of a light olive brown or khaki color.
2. Faded and dull in appearance.
3. Dull or commonplace in character; dreary: a drab personality.

PS What happened to your Avatar ? Worried about Stalkers?

Well, I suppose you could say that there's too much from the newspapers in it - in fact there was nothing else this morning - but at least it wasn't from the tabloids and it was delivered with a smile on her face. The selection of music was good too.

Drab, drab, drab! Awful rubbish that isn't befitting of a large national radio network. It's all "local radio gone national" - which of course is what she's been doing up until now.

I listened to her for about 15 minutes this morning before switching off just before the fool came on at 6.30am and that was enough.

Drab, drab, drab radio! Did I mention that I thought it to be drab?

It’s called career progression, Colin. Most national DJs/presenters started out at some backwater local station – that is the way of the world. There is no Uni Degree course at the end of which- you instantaneously become a National Radio Mega-star, you have to work at it.

No, it's not drab, by any of those definitions.

You're very hard to please, CB... you don't like lively, "nobody sleeps while I'm on"... you don't like a lot of texts and emails (which are only the same as all the postcards DJs read out in days of yore)... you don't like the cosy, girly Sarah/Tarbuck chat... and you don't like the newspaper reviews, be they the trashy celeb/soap sort or the lighter bits from the broadsheets.

The early morning island between Alex and Chris is presumably briefed to provide a contrast (what other reason is there for its existence?), which it does.

Correct on all counts. (Well, except that I do like "lively" - just not a certain sort of "lively").

Alex is good (he's a very good, and under-rated, broadcaster). Then it gets drab. And then childish. Doesn't matter though - I've moved away to better options so those that love "drab" and "childish" have plenty to be happy with!

Well I didn't listen, she put me in a bad mood all day yesterday and life's too short already.

It's the woman's yappy voice which is too high, in a similar fashion to Evans. I like very few female broadcasters, it's the high pitch of their voices that grates.

Interestingly, there's an article on the Telegraph website on "why she won't startle the early birds".

Surely "local radio gone national" is national radio? Confused

I should point out that I'm not keen on her BBC London programme, where all she does is talk for three hours, and occasionally she might let someone else talk for a couple of seconds.

But I like the format of the early morning show, the music breaks it up a bit and makes it acceptable that she always has something to say.

I don't buy newspapers that often, maybe the Telegraph once or twice, so to have someone like Vanessa to read various stories from the papers is something I quite like. And its not just the big national papers - I think I heard her mention something from the Worcester News yesterday.

In a way its sort of similar to Sarah Kennedy's format - the music breaks up the chat. A different type of chat, maybe; both still are very different on-hair personalities. But both the Kennedy and Feltz programmes were/are a general mix of news and chat, with added music.

On a final note, there are always people who are going to disagree with new presenters joining any radio station; Vanessa coming to Radio 2 is no different, and neither should anyone expect it to be. My grandparents don't really like Alex Lester or Radcliffe and Maconie - but that doesn't make them bad broadcasters, does it?

I'm referring to style - it has a "local radio" style to it.

Preferably one that avoids the words 'text' and 'e mail' and come to think of it 'stand in'

Nod,I have every respect for what you are saying but it does get rather boring when every post contains the same information

We all know you hate shows which include these things and that's fair enough
Do you keep mentioning the subject in order to wind people up or are you doing it for a bet?

Do I detect a bit of mischief here Confused

I think you're all very cruel.

She hasn't got a soft face but she's not ugly.
She mentioned make-up tonight - her 3.50 alarm doesn't give her much time for it - I'm sure there will be a photographer handy to record the odd morning she goes without.

Her voice in normal conversation is actually quite low, but when projected for radio goes up an octave, and there's quite a lot of sibilance. This might improve as she relaxes a bit. However, despite speaking quite quickly, she is very clear - you can hear and understand every word she says, which is more than you can say for some R2 presenters, news and traffic people.

The newspaper interviews suggested that she's been given carte blanche (and that she was first choice for the slot - I detected some incredulity about that!). As I suspected she would, she acknowledges that what's not required at 5am is the more strident and trashy side of her broadcasting persona.

I don't see why everyone gets on their high horse about texts and emails. They all do it - it's unfair to criticise some and not others - and it's only the 21st century equivalent of the postcard or phone message which they've relied on since day one.

That's the point I have been banging on about for several weeks Ron

Certain posters here seem to have an obsession about certain presenters being too heavily reliant on texts and e mails but the fact is it's a part of modern life and all presenters do it to some extent

Even though I don't like Ms Feltz I wouldn't criticise her on that particular point

Modern technology is a fact of life and people need to adjust to it

That may be true, Ruddles (I'm a fervent supporter of uses for new technology when it makes life easier and more interesting for me) but the problem arises with radio presenters who seem entirely reliant of such approaches as a mask for their own inadequacies as broadcasters.

There are plenty of good radio stations - Radio Caroline and Planet Rock being two of my current favourites - that make occasional use of such "listener input" without it becoming tedious. Sadly, Radio 2 employs a fair few presenters (Evans, Wright and others) who couldn't last a minute without reading reams of silly texts and emails from listeners.

It's a question of balance, but many Radio 2 shows seem to have lost grip and - to me at least - it's just annoying.

Completely agree Colin - no-one minds the odd e-mail/text but as you say certain "presenters" rely on them almost exclusively. Without them and "Factoids" what would SW do? Rolling Eyes (sing annoyingly over tracks I suppose!)

Perhaps I'm unusual but it really doesn't bother me

To me e mail and texts are just the modern version of listeners writing in

I suppose others would say that the presenter controls the agenda with texts and e mails but if you have a sensible presenter it's not a problem

As for Steve Wright I have long said his format is old and outdated and so I can't argue with what has been said
Dale Winton was much better but I don't suppose we'll see him for a while if he's living in Florida

I send in odd e-mails really often but they only get read-out on the night-time shows... Smile

emails and texts are good when they are thread driven and relevant in the context of the show. I don’t like random-topic pointless e-mails, although every now and again they can spawn and interesting thread but that is quite rare.

Vanessa was sounding chirpy this morning. It's a tough old thing to sound that happy at that time of the day.

Yes those sort MiS, are pointless - they boil down to, "please say my name on the radio". It would save a lot of time and effort if those DJs just read out extracts from the phone book.
