One of our local libraries - the Stony Stratford library here in Milton Keynes - has been in the national and even international news this last week because, as a protest against local council cuts, locals decided to take borrow as many items as they could to clear the shelves. They did so completely!

It will be debated on the Paddy O'Connell show on R2 this lunchtime.

BTW - the term "A Cock & Bull Story" originates from Stony Stratford, and relates to the two main coaching inns, The Cock and The Bull (both fine drinking establishments!), that exist in the High Street. Google for the full story details......

I read about this on another forum, and this link,

http://www.independent.co.uk/arts-entertainment/books/news/library-emptied-in-bid-to-fight-closure-2185447.html

I used to love libraries, but rarely visit any now. Member of our family runs the new library in Polmont Scotland, very nice it is too, but it's never quiet, kids running around and people jostling in and out of the internet room.

On one bulletin their list of 'services' didn't actually include book-lending Rolling Eyes

Stony Stratford library is a typical market-town library (it's just off the Market Square where some scenes of the cult film "Withnail And I" were shot back in the 80s) and it's a lovely building. It's very much at the heart of the community and if MK Council closes it they'll be making a disastrous mistake for a much-valued resource. The locals are angry enough as it is.....

Think it's to be on the JV show today if anyone is interested, towards the end I think as it was the last thing on Ken's preview chat.

That's right. I mentioned it in my opening post but referred (perhaps confusingly) to the Paddy O'Connell show instead!

Sorry I read it too fast Colin! Looks like it will be on about 12.30 rather than later as I had first thought.

Yes, it was. I heard Emily Malleson on the line talking about the surprising success of the blitz on the library. I know Emily's mum Sue.

Funnily enough, Paddy introduced Stony Stratford as being "near Milton Keynes" when in fact it's part of the city. I guess they think that MK is all concrete and glass (which it isn't).
