|
|
The Tory led government yesterday caved in to demands of its Lib Dem partners to do away with the right of police to detain & question suspected Islamist terrorists.
Even some loyal Conservatives found it necessary to back Labours' ed Balls in challenging this measure being pushed through parliament by the government.
Tory MP Edward Leigh acused the coalition of putting the rights of Islamist terrorists above the safety of British citizens.
His plea: "Can I urge you to put the safety of the British people first?
" went unheeded
"I suspect that for most people in London if it is a choice between their daughters being blown up on the London Tube or a terrorist who hates everything we stand for spending 28 days in relative comfort before being charged I think they would choose the latter. " he added
"So act on the evidence and put the safety of the people first."
Lib Dem MPs & their Jihadist allies in the British Muslim Public Affairs Committee hailed this as "a victory".
The Liberal Democrats have a long history of supporting Islamist suicide bombers in blowing up Israeli citizens. Leading Lib Dem "theorist" Baroness Tongue had been seen "celebrating" the terrorist blowing up of a Pizzeria in Jerusalem & blamed the 7/7 London bombings NOT on the bombers or their ideolkogy but on "Criminal British foreign policy" |

Another way of looking at this is that if you change British Criminal Law bringing in 28 day detention as the Blair Government did you are effectively allowing the terrorists agenda to affect ordinary British life and its longstanding traditions of fairness enshrined in our legal system
Some would say in those circumstances the terrorists have already won if their actions achieve that result
It's a very thorny issue but of course if innocent people are wrongly detained the taxpayers can end up with a large compensation bill as has already happened in some cases _________________ Are you ready for a Ruddles? |

I can see your point Ruddles, but innocent people would not be detained. It would be people the security forces haqve been observing to be active in various jihadist organizations.
It is very hard to get a conviction in this area because revealing some of the evidence against these people would at times endanger national security.
Think about why the Blair government brought in these rules. Do you think it was bloody mindedness? Certainly it was never used against political opponents.
Of course there is a danger in, but miscarriages of justice have been known in our courts. Innocent people have been convicted crimes rhey did not convict & cri9minals who were guilty been found not guilty!
The priority must be keeping people safe. I don't think reducing detentions to 29 days in its self presents a huge danger but I think that combined with cuts in the security & anti-terrorist forces does.
I think the Lib Dems have an ideological aversion to our security & both the tories & lib dems have a knee jerk reaction to wanting to revedrse everything Labour has done. |
