It's been announced the Police spoke to David Cameron communication PR Andy Coulson - regarding the News Of The World phone tapping allegations in his solicitors office on Thursday. He wasn't arrested or cautioned. He resigned as editor of the tabloid newspaper back in 2007.
A spokesman for the PM said he's standing by Mr Coulson. |

The Prime Minister expressed that he had total confidence in Mr Coulson which in my experience is pretty much a guarantee that he will be sacked in the near future
There was a great deal of truth in what we used to see in Yes Minister
Coulson should never have been given the job in the first place after editing the News of the Screws
How any credible politician could have any confidence in a man like Coulson beggars belief!

Well he's gone, today
now the cynics of us would say that he has left today on a day when Bliar in front of Iraq war enquiry and Johnson's departure. Is the government trying to bury the news?

If the Government was trying to bury bad news it doesn't seem to have worked because I think the public is more intelligent than most politicians think
The situation also begs the question did he jump or was he pushed?
Either way it will not surprise people to know that I'm glad to see the back of him

Isn't it strange that almost more attention has been paid to someone isn't actually part of the elected Govt.? Same thing as when Alistair Campbell was doing the same job for Labour. I think at times he thought he really was part of the Govt.!
I feel sorry for Alan Johnson.

Helen,that's because as I was saying on another thread the press and media run this country not the elected Government whatever party is in power
It's a very dangerous situation when Government Ministers have to pay so much attention to the agendas of the tabloid press and how the press will report decisions instead of concentrating on doing what is right for the country
If the Government got on with the job and waved two fingers at whatever the press said there would never be any role for the likes of Coulson or Campbell because there would be no need for image enhancement or spin
Former tabloid editors are not suitable to fulfil the role anyway as they generally come with lots of baggage

It's the Malcolm Tucker thing they can't become the story. It's just odd that Coulson was the story for sooo long and still had the confidence of the PM.
Personally I have always liked AJ he's seemed one of the Good guys in New Labour, I was disapointed that he didn't stand for leader him being one of the few that has had a life before politics, he was hopelessly out of his depths as shadow chancellor though.
It is bad enough to have these kind of "family issues" but to have them played out in the scalp hungry press is a little harsh

It's taken long enough...if they thought they were going to bury it today in wake of the Chilcot Enquiry they were wrong...top news on the BBC at two.
I feel sorry for Alan Johnson too....a decent man by all accounts. |

Yes he seems to be highly regarded by those in other parties as well as his own.
He was one of the few who have actually had jobs outside of parliament/politics and have experience of life. I'd include David Davis in that group.
