Yesterday I went to St-Martin-in-the-Fields, Trafalgar Square, for the service in memory of the great JP. The church was packed with jazz and big band fans, as well as members of the Parnell family.

There was a big band (conducted by Laurie Johnson) consisting of musos who had played with JP, including Roy Willox, Ronnie Hughes, Bill Geldard, Jimmy Hastings, Tony Fisher etc. Then there was a re-vamped “Best of British Jazz” sextet which JP used to play in, introduced by fellow-muso Roy Willox.

Barry Cryer was the MC, who, after hearing JP's 14 year old granddaughter playing the piano, said: “That brings home to me my own mortality, in fact I've stopped buying green bananas”.

A lovely occasion.

Sounds excellent! The makers of the Muppets TV series have a lot to thank him for.
