I used to really enjoy his old shows TFI, toothbrush , Saturday afternoons on R2 and even on Drivetime BUT I just can't listen to his hyped up Breakfast Show, I have to switch off.

I've tried 6music but at that time of day its bad as well. R4 or the ipod for me.

I must admit that I have found Simon Bates to be very listenable this week, its the dam adverts that let it down.

Its a shame that its not on FM nationally, then maybe Smooth could be an alternative, I know I would listen in the car if I could.

When are the next RAJARs due?

I'm a little surprised that you can't receive Smooth on FM in Gloucestershire

I suppose it depends on which bit you're in but I know reception is good in both Birmingham and Bristol

When I first tried to tune my car radio to Smooth North West I had some problems but I persisted and now I get a good signal although not as good as in the house

If you go to Smoothradio.co.uk and e mail them explaining the problem I'm sure they will do their best to help

Blimey, that’s quite a thing, Helen. Reading that, I’d be devastated in his shoes. He puts in so much effort to his show; he’s so upbeat, lively and positive. And he does all of that knowing that some people feel as you do: I couldn’t do that.

Devastated? Don't be daft the guy is so think skinned he doesn't give a dam for anyone's opinion other than his own.

As far as upbeat, lively and positive, fine if he were presenting Whackaday, but we are talking about a breakfast radio show aimed at the over 35's. That's the LAST thing I want in the morning, just something to eeease me into the day.

Try Radio 4- that should ease you into old age.

So do you want just gentle music too? What if the music was upbeat and lively? Are you talking about ruling out anything up-tempo? Does it have to be all Matt Monroe and Nat King Cole? Do the Sex Pistols not get a look-in because you want to be eased into your day?

Just because someone makes an effort with something doesn't mean that it's going to be good Rachel. He would never be devastated that I didn't appreciate his efforts, that is for sure!

He might be devastated that you hate him though. Maybe I’m just too naïve, Hubby says I shouldn’t be allowed out on my own. Smile

It would depend on whether he considered that you meant "hate" in its original, literal, philosophical and psychological meaning, which implies that you want him harmed, or dead, or merely the modern, media-inspired hyperbolic use of the word to show intense dislike.

So he might obtain a restraining order, or not give it a second thought.
My money's on the latter.

I can understand someone not liking the show etc. and hating it. But how can you possibly hate someone personally you have never met?!!! Not sure that Aitch does actually hate him in that sense, she doesn't like him or the show is my understanding which is fair enough and hates the show. Sure I will be put right if I am wrong Smile

I for one can understand exactly what Helen is saying and why she is saying it

It's true that its difficult to hate a person you have never met but you can build up a fair picture of what that person stands for and in the case of CE the agenda seems to be to reduce Radio 2 to the level of CBBC

He needs to grow up and start to realise that he is broadcasting to an audience whose average age is 50 not 10 and the sooner he realises that the better

He should never ever have been given the breakfast slot as what was needed after years of the boring Wogan was a presenter who could appeal to the broad section of Radio 2 listeners

Simon Mayo would have been the obvious choice as he used to do the Radio 1 breakfast show or perhaps Johnnie Walker could have been persuaded to do the show permanently

Sadly a great opportunity to improve on the previous situation was missed and it seems now to have reached the point where CE has more influence than the person who is supposed to be the Controller

He's already ruined Radio 1 and the One Show and he's well on the way to ruining Radio 2 which is why I never now listen before 10am and sometimes I can't be bothered even then

Gosh I'm really surprised that so many seem to object to the way I feel, and I'm sure I'm not the only one, about someone who IMHO has had such a big hand in ruining a station that so many of us loved before he set foot in the door.

I'd never wish anyone dead so I'll just leave it at that.

I don't think there are many people who object to the way you feel Helen

It seems to be the usual suspects posting their views who fail to realise that they are in a very tiny minority on this forum

Whilst everyone is entitled to their opinion I get thoroughly fed up of these people trying to make the rest of us feel guilty about what is really no more than them peddling their own minority agenda Sad

I've never taken Chris Evans, or anything he does or says, seriously. Wink

What I do take seriously is the wall-to-wall CE-promoting trash that's ruined a perfectly good radio station.

Funny thing; I've started to get so absorbed with R4 that, to my annoyance, I keep missing Ken Bruce's show.

Blimey! How do you walk with such a big chip? Only you can make you feel guilty, sweetheart, and you jolly-well should after your previous post.
Minority on here!? Do me a favour, love, there are only ten of us, and you’ve been here only half a dog-watch (Google it if you don’t know what that is).

You may be a man and as such I’m genetically and evolutionary predisposed to be smaller, weaker and more easily overpowered than you; and as a woman, I’m emotionally programmed to be physically attracted to you in a crisis situation but your words are enough to brush aside all of that, because you sir, have taken the last biscuit, step outside, man or no man, you’re gonna spit teeth. Could anyone on here please translate the contents of the last post into English?

As there are actually more than 250 registered members on this forum hopefully someone will have studied Goobldegook as a foreign language and might be able to help Confused

Alternatively I'll have to consult the Plain English Society or failing that Stuart Hall Smile

Please not Simon Mayo or any other old bland R1 DJs whos target audience was 14 year olds and playing their pop tunes (that doesn't exclude JW), I want a R2 that's NOT just old R1.

Virtually all presenters on Radio 2 now were formerly on Radio One but just like their audience most of them have moved on and I think if you listen to Simon's Drivetime show that point is fairly evident

The problem with the current breakfast show host is that he is one of the few former Radio One crew who has not moved on which is why I think most people dislike his show

As I said he needs to understand that the audience is 50 years old on average and pitch his presentation and style accordingly which comes back to the point I made earlier

It's not that people necessarily hate him as a person but they hate what he stands for and the devaluation of the quality of the network which goes with it

Agree, Evans, along with Zoe Ball do not hark back to the golden days of Radio 1, they are from the turgid post Bannister era, and are not what you would call proper DJ's.

Was never a great fan of Simon Bates, but if you do manage to catch him on the Smooth Breakfast show, that is the sort of thing that R2 should be offering, its great to hear the Golden Hour again.

I've said it before, and I'll say it again (only to be shot down in flames!) a lot of decent presenters were lost to the BBC during the Bannister era.

It sounds just like his R1 show, with the stuff like confessions with bits he's inhereted from CE (they are the better bits).

Most of the ex-R1 haven't moved on eg CE, ZB, SM, SW they are just the same to me. Radcliffe and McConie are good but they have some knowledge of music and are interesting.

Meaning?

I'm 50, and a bit, but I'm not in my dotage yet.

Ron, I want to be woken up with decent music either lively or otherwise and a presenter who has even some basic knowledge about the stuff he is playing and who does not constantly talk over the music nor someone who includes features in a so called adult show which are more suited to CBBC

Like you I don't want to be put to sleep but I also don't want to begin the day totally stressed out otherwise they won't need to put me to sleep

I'll just end up doing the job for them Shocked

Well, I didn't realise that "hating" somebody meant we wish them harm, or even dead.
I thought "hate" was just the opposite to "love".
I hate snow.....and I certainly don't love Chris Evans.

I don't know how people have come to assume that he has no knowledge about the music he plays - listen back to today's show, even the bit without Elton John and the lie to that is proven.

In any case, in the context of a mass-appeal family show at breakfast time I don't think that an encyclopaedic or anal knowledge of the music and artists is essential or even desirable.

They all talk over the music, from Howling Wolf onwards. Alex does it, JW does it, so what. It irritates sometimes, but so long as it doesn't happen on the specialist shows that you want to listen properly to it's no great problem.

One children's feature lasting, what, 90 seconds, does not constitute CBBC.
Although Radio 2's nominal target audience is the over 35s the Breakfast Show is a family one - I'm sure that couples of all ages with school-age children prefer to tune to it rather than the Moyles on Radio 1, so there's nothing wrong in having something to engage the kids.

All anybody has to do is to listen to the first 2 or 3 minutes of Evans' "shows" to realise what a complete prat the guy is.

Thankfully, there's so much other good stuff out there on the interwebby thing that can be streamed to a variety of devices so he's easily avoided.

I'd like to know about that, without listening to today's show, examples.

A children's feature if fine, but the rest of the programme has too much childish foolishness.

I have back problems at the moment, and as a consequence am sleeping badly, and waking early.
The good news is that I have been listening to Vanessa Feltz this week.
What a joy, nicely spoken, no shouting, no laughing at nothing, just have to remember to get to the off switch by six twenty eight.

Precisely the reason why I've given up on R2 at breakfast.
