Five Oscars is no mean feat ...he composed some lovely music that will be played forever ...

This has always been a favourite of mine

The haunting theme from Midnight Cowboy was the one chosen by Huey Morgan as a tribute to JB

RIP

a real loss, in his heyday he was unbeatable

Beat me to posting the midnight cowboy song. Goldfinger ignoring the vocals which isn't bad Rolling Eyes but the arrangement is outstanding, I won't post it because you're bound to hear it over the next few days

I bet Stuart Maconie or Jarvis Cocker will play his theme to The Persuaders on 6 Music this coming Sunday!

Brian Matthew's played a lot of Adam Faith stuff John Barry arranged too.

I love the theme tune to The Persuaders (great series as well). So evocative of winter Sunday afternoons in the early 70s watching The Persuaders preceded by The Big Match on ITV.

It's being played on tonight's Radcliffe & Maconie show as I write this.

Sad loss. Some of his later music was a bit samey but good stuff - pity he'd not done a film since 2001 but it seems he was a bit of a cantankerous bugger and kept walking out.

"We Have All The Time In The World" is one of my all-time favourite songs, and sometimes I prefer his Bond theme from the same film (On Her Majesty's Secret Service) to the proper Bond theme.

About 20 years ago there was a lengthy conversation between Barry and Sheridan Morley on Radio 2 that was just wonderful. Really went deep into his life and work.

And now, a rant...

So, the first I knew of his passing was when I got up at 7am and saw it on Twitter from fellow Bond composer David Arnold. No idea when it was announced on the radio, but it was in the News bulletin at 8am. I expected Evans to play some Barry as tribute, but no... about 8.20 he announced they would play some Barry as the "Gobstoppers" after the 8.30 news.

He did, and played a good selection (including Juke Box Jury and The Pretenders) that must have gone on about 15 minutes. All very good, excellent work. However, he then felt the need to bang on about what a good job he'd done mixing it all and encouraged Johnny and Lynne to tell him what a good job he'd done. He read out texts from people telling him what a good job he'd done. So, that's lovely - a man dies to boost Chris Evans' ego.

The worst thing was that the only record played between Moira Stuart saying "Composer John Barry has died" and the medley was Evans' "70s Classic" of the day: Blue Oyster Cult's "Don't Fear The Reaper!" How tasteless can you get?
