Oh FFS! Radio 2 have axed Radcliffe & Maconie, and put Jo Whiley on instead.

Remember when they axed Mark & Stuart's Thursday show and there was a bit of an outcry? Well, Bob Shennan has done the exact opposite of what everyone asked for and shoved the dynamic duo off to 6 Music so that whiney Whiley can do the whole week (apart from Friday, but it's only a matter of time).

Press Release here: http://www.bbc.co.uk/pressoffice/pressreleases/stories/2011/02_february/01/whiley.shtml

I'm well pissed off.

That's because Shennan is a clueless prat. And I hope somebody at R2 reads this and passes it on to him!!! Smile

As he runs Radio 2/BBC6 Music, if Jo is as good as he suggests he should've put her new programme over there and left Radcliffe and Maconie on Radio 2 and this is from me who doesn't even listen to their programme but I know how popular it is and the following it has built up.

Even allowing the fact that you can listen via the net via I-player or some kind of facilty in the future(that's even changing due to the BBC cuts etc...)1pm-4pm will be difficult for many of the loyal fans their programme has built up.

Bob comes to Radio 2 and BBC6Music with history as a lot of his decisions angered many of the loyal listeners to Radio 5 and for many it's never improved. Ratings wise it may look as though all is well there but it has the advantage that having a lot of sports based material people will tune in but the news side of things many feel was allowed to slide downhill.

People worried Radio 2 might suffer perhaps this is a sign. I'm not particularly criticisng Jo, she may be an experienced broadcaster, not having listened to Radio 1 for ages I cannot say.

He may've done this to get around the criticism that there is a lack of female voices presenting music programmes and to getaway from the othercriticism of always bringing in celebrities to host programmes.

Then again not knowing all the ins and outs of what happens behind the scenes it looks like he offered her the job but maybe Radio 1 was changing it's schedule and they were letting her go and she put feelers out and was taken on. I assume someone on BBC6Music is being let go so R&M have their new position.

I'm speechless, R&M have become an institution in this house as there is precious little on the TV in the evening.

Another ploy by the BBC to net some more DAB listeners?

I have always felt that their show was the natural successor to the John Peel show, and for that reason why haven't they at least kept it to the evenings?

R2 is fast becoming the vacuous R1 of 90's era Bannister, Whitley will sit well alongside Evans, Mayo and Ball.

Look out Ken they're commin' to get you....

The only good thing is a new 50-part authored history of pop for Radio 2 in 2012 hosted by Stuart and Mark Radcliffe to present new Radio 2 show(but the latter will mean documentaries may be reduced still further)and other specialist shows...

This could be being done for an increase in DAB followers as you suggest, I suspect it's for budget constraints...

I had a funny feeling Mark and Stuart would move over to 6 Music. I remember when Liz Kershaw, Neal James and Mark Goodier used to present an evening show on Radio 1 and Mark G at time produced it. It does seem Radio 2 going down the same road.

I'm unemployed at the minute so can listen to R+M in their new slot unless i have a job of course.Haven't they won lots of awards and now they get moved to DAB.I will of course give Jo a fair go but R2 seems to be losing it in my eyes.Mayo was excellent on R5 but sems very boring on drivetime.Wright's format sounds very dated dont listen to vine Ken Bruce is ok and im also in the camp that's not keen on evans.Saying that i am looking forward to Huey Morgan and as long as Janice and Alex are on of a nightime i will tune in......I don't of course tune in 24 hrs a day but do listen to R2 a fair bit esp in the evenings

Radcliffe and Maconie moving to 6 is yet another reason to abandon Radio 2 for its digital sister station.

Will not be tuning in to Wiley.

Marc Riley & Gid Coe much more interesting on 6

Those who don't like Steve Wright's formulaic and rather tired afternoon show can have a real alternative from 1 to 4.

For some reason I don't listen to radio much at that time so it's only rarely I hear Radcliffe and Maconie. I quite like their show when I do listen though.

I don't have a DAB radio and don't listen on a PC at that time of day either, so won't hear them on 6 Music.

If Jo is only on until 9.30pm I wonder what we'll get at 9.30pm? I suspect the half hour music programmes will slip into that slot...you know things like The Oganist Entertains that then opens up 10pm-Midnight to whatever they wish one hour specials or two hour blocks.

Wonder if he'll mess around with the specialist music strands that are between 7pm-8pm?

I don't like R & M at all but hubby does. I think they're too "back street pub" for Radio 2, so this is a "Well done Bob" from me. Yay! A good decision! I do like that chain thing they do but they too often pick a complete knob with a rubbish track.
They actually scare me- if I were to be in a room with them acting as they do on air, I'd have to leave before the fight broke out- they always seem like they're just about to kick-off with each other.

Rolling Eyes Every bl****ng thread.

Not just "back street pub" but "upstairs back room of the back street pub".
I liked most of the music, it was them rabbiting like a pair of schoolboys that got on my wick. I don't suppose they'll be any different on 6.

When I've heard Jo Whiley she has seemed perfectly innocuous, anonymous, dare I say it, dull?

Friends, Romans, Countrymen...

The fall of the Radio 2 Empire is nigh! Shocked

The emperor Bobicus and his Shennanigans will see to that.

He inherited his empire from the Empress Leslia and could not resist tampering with it.

The empress Leslia had herself fallen because of her infatuation with Brandicus and Wossicus.

Now Bobicus' star gladiators are crossing the sea to the empire of the Six Cities.

Only the celtic gladiator The Bruce remains.

The runes and entrails all point the same way: shell out some denarii and buy a DAB radio. Wink

Et tu, Bruce?

Unless they are planning to extend Drivetime to 8pm? Or Janice Long is going to start half hour early?

I wouldn't be surprised Dermot O'Leary moves to 6 Music, with Zoe Ball taking over his show, and Richard Madeley takes over the Saturday morning show?

Wha...? Really, I think if Dermot was offered a 6Music slot instead of Radio 2, he'd leave altogether. Many more irons in the fire.

I'm beginning to wonder what the point of Radio 2 is now...... it appears to be: ask/listen to what the listeners want....

Then do the EXACT £*%$ing OPPOSITE!!!!!

Whiley for Radcliffe???? It's like replacing Stanley Matthews with Accrington Stanley's tea-lady FFS Evil or Very Mad

It is Nemone who is on 6 music weekdays between 1:00-4:00pm. Ironically a female presenter! I don't know whether she's getting another show at another time or is leaving 6 music altogether.

Rachel, for once we agree! Singularly they're fine, I prefer Maconie to Radcliffe, but the banter all too often seems both forced and fake; I keep expecting the pair of 'em to break into Monty Python's "Four Yorkshiremen" routine.

As Ron said the music's pretty good, though like Helen I don't listen too often at that time of the evening.

Which, ironically, means that another female presenter, Jo Good will be displaced. I wonder if they have another show lined up for her, or are they letting her go?

6 Music is definitely attracting me more and more. If Bob Harris and Gambo moved lock, stock and barrel to the station, I'd probably abandon the good ship Shennan to its inevitable fate. R5 under his (mis-)management went downhill fast, hardly listen to that now either. Seems he's trying to do the same to Britain's most popular station.... and succeeding.

That's a perfectly good keyboard you owe me, Rachel, this one's been pebble-dashed with hot tea! Laughing

That would be a case of 'what goes around, comes around', as Bob Harris was on 6 Music at it's start when he had a Sunday afternoon show. He was still doing his Radio 2 shows as well at the time.

Yuk! another one to sit perfectly alongside Zoe Ball and Chris Evans - can't stand the woman, all she does is mumble, must have been given the gig due to her prowess at the recent hosting of the R2 Electric Proms with elton john, and neil diamond (and the great dyed ginger one!).

It's desperately sad, what the latest 2 Controllers have done to Radio 2. Apart from Ken and Sunday afternoon/evening, they may as well close it down now. I suppose we should be grateful that at least Jo Whiley has SOME radio experience, I'm surprised Shennan hasn't parachuted in another "celeb".

It can only be a matter of time before poor Ken is shunted into the sidelines, and the lights will finally go out on daytime Radio 2 Crying or Very sad

I have to admit I prefer them presenting seperately and I especially enjoy both when they do more documentary/features work. Mark was acceptable on Radio 5 and was equally capable of doing the kind of work Mayo did there.

Stuart does do other things(he's doing Ramblings soon on Radio 4)

Forgive me but isn't Mark Radcliffe getting a late night show on Radio 2?

As for the celebs thing, the only one of the daytime weekday presenters who has not had real radio experience before joining Radio 2 is Jeremy Vine.

How about we actually listen to Jo's show with an open mind and then post?

I've only seen/heard Jo Whiley a few times and she always strikes me as someone who is desperate to be seen as cool and hip.
I bet the music she plays is very limited too.
