At present I watching and very much enjoying Sandie Shaw in Concert recorded a few years ago

She's performing all her well known hits but also some much more recent stuff and she has for the first time just given a superb rendition of 'Anyone Who Had a Heart' which she never attempted in the 60s and what a superb version it was and far better than the Cilla cover version

She also performed 'Hand in Glove' as done with the Smiths in the 80s which was also excellent

I had almost forgotton just how excellent a performer Sandie was and obviously still is and I'd recommend seeing her show if you get the chance

I thought it was about time we had a thread on the forum for Vintage TV as it's a very good network with lots of interesting items which have not seen the light of day for quite a while
Why not take a look on Sky Channel 369

A suggestion limited to those, of course, who choose to subsidise the Murdoch Mafia's media empire! Smile

Not necessarily Colin

There are some music channels available on Freeview and Freesat

I don't know whether this is one of them

Is this the new channel with which Paul Gambaccini is involved? If so, thanks for the reminder Ruddles. I read about it months ago but when I failed to find it via Sky I sort of forgot about it. Will try again.

Eileen I don't know whether Paul is involved but it does cover a lot of 60s music with some archive concert footage and the odd documentary

If you watch their early evening output they have a 60s hour a bit like MTV Classic has the Eighties at 8pm but where they have put together their own videos to go with the songs being played as obviously there were no videos prior to 1975
It's quite cleverly done and well worth a look
I know that Avid watches it now and again because I remember her mentioning it in one of her posts

If anyone is interested a documentary about the band Jethro Tull has just started introduced by Anne Nightingale

It seems an interesting programme made around the late 80s and is talking about the early days and how Chrysalis Records was really formed because of this band

Shame it clashes with the Beatles thing on ITV a bit later on but it's well worth looking at even for only half an hour

Watched the Beatles on the 50th anniversary of their first appearance at the Cavern.

Wow the memories that came flooding back! Names of groups who weren't as famous as the Fab Four and people too, Freda the girl who ran the fan club, I was a member for a time!

It was many years before I ever went to Liverpool (1984 I think) and I could still remember reading about some of the places all those years ago. I know I felt really excited as it was my childhood history all coming back to me.

Helen, I saw it too (in fact I have it on DVD because friends in Australia and also New Zealand want copies - with commercials cut out!) and it reminded me of going to stay with my Aunt & Uncle in Chester and being taking by my cousin into Liverpool one day to visit NEMS and to see the Cavern Club in Mathew Street. We did this two years running - 1965 and 1966 - and even though I was only 11 and 12 respectively I could still gauge the energy of the place. It was fabulous.

Then, in 1973, one of my college buddies who came from Liverpool mentioned to me that the Cavern Club was to be demolished to make way for a railway service shaft or something and how Scousers everywhere were up in arms about it. What an incredibly stupid act on the part of a dim-witted and short-sighted Liverpool City Council? The next time I went to the city was to visit him in Huyton in 1976, and a visit to Mathew Street (and to the empty plot where the club once stood) showed it to be a rather bleak and run-down place. Very sad...

Watching the programme last night stirred a mixture of emotions. In one sense it was great to see and hear the sounds of such a creative and inspiring era in popular music, but in another sense I found it slightly depressing to think that it was so long ago and that the world isn't necessarily a better place than it was then.

Or perhaps I'm just getting old. Confused

The decision to demolish the original Cavern was sheer madness

It might have been in need of some renovation judging from what was said but who in their right mind destroys one of the greatest pieces of 20th century history for some rail track which doesn't even get built

I'm afraid that was just typical of Liverpool City Council around that time as it was run by a bunch of idiots

I never got to go to the Cavern but I did regularly go to Liverpool Stadium in the 70s which was an old boxing stadium and that used to have some great artists from the late 60s and early 70s until it also got demolished around 1977

This, for me,was a lovely hour of wallowing in nostalgia,Helen, and I loved every minute of it....Smile

Frankie Connor, one of those doing the remembering, has a radio show on Radio Merseyside at the weekends that I listen to sometimes.... he plays some lovely oldies..I've had a few requests played on there.

Didn't know Bobby Darin had composed the song "I'll Be There"...Gerry and the Pacemakers did a lovely cover of that...

I didn't know that either Becky and I'm sure it was the B side of one of Gerry's singles. Not sure if it was How Do You Do What You Do To Me, or I Like It, one of those I'm sure, I've still a box of 45s in a cupboard so I'll check them out one of these days!

I've got it on the Sky box Colin and will copy it over to DVD to keep. We used to go over to Liverpool fairly regularly for shopping when we first moved from Newcastle. I used to get withdrawal symptoms as there was no John Lewis anywhere near where we are and there is a big one there! I loved the atmosphere of the city and the people are so friendly.

Yes, a very good programme. It was nice to see film clips of The Searchers, who were my favourite 'Epstein' band. They never did a bad song.

One of these days I will definitely visit Liverpool and do a little tour of the area. It is a cliche but that early/mid 60s period really did change things.

I hardly recognised Mike Pender at first! Good to see Tony Crane and the other guy from the Merseybeats as well. Always liked their records.

Helen: I don't think 'I'll Be There' was a b-side of either of the two songs you mention. I've consulted a Gerry And The Pacemakers CD (which I've never played!) which says it was a small UK hit in it's own right in 1965, two years after I Like It and How Do You Do It.

You could well be right Schizoidman! I'm probably mixing it up with something else. Of course we used to play the b sides more back then than in later times. I wonder if it was in the film Ferry Cross the Mersey? I think it came out round that time?

I still remember the video of Ferry Cross The Mersey on TOTP! The band were on a ferry miming to the song and I remember a dog on the boat as well, the sort of things an eleven year old would remember.

A wonderfully evocative song.

Talking of b-sides, most of those bands' hits were written by established songwriters, whereas the b-sides were often written by the band themselves to save on royalties. Many weren't all that good!

It was Beryl Marsden who sang I'll Be There over the end credits of the Cavern documentary. As far as I know, she was no relation to Gerry.

Well I'm shocked - or at least I would be if I could get this damned emoticon to work Shocked - ah there we are Smile

I stayed overnight at the weekend Classic car show yesterday and in the evening after imbibing copious pints of Robinsons Old Tom (6.2%) - no barley water for me thankyou Smile I and a few others decided that we needed a walk to clear our heads so we wandered into the hospitality tent which generally has all mod cons includuing Sky TV and almost immediately I noticed that they were tuned in to Vintage TV - very appropriate for a Classic Car Event I thought Laughing

But after a few minutes absolutely everyone was amazed to see that they played the Gary Glitter track 'Do You Want To Touch Me' - not the original version but the absolutely superb 1982 cover by Joan Jett - a truly underrated artist in my view and one of the top females ever to grace a rock stage

Everyone present was singing along and today after a late breakfast with a slight hangover from the night before it prompted me to wonder whether the playing of that track which obviously had the effect of putting royalties in Mr G's pocket was simply the action of a mad maverick producer putting two fingers up to the world or whether on the contrary it was the action of a highly intelligent producer who was testing the water to see what reaction would be prompted and whether the time might be right for TV and radio stations actually resuming playing Glitter tracks

Although Glitter was obviously quite rightly convicted of some very serious crimes could it be that by comparison to some other events we have seen recently where young children were actually abused harmed and in some cases even killed his simple downloading of child pornography although very serious might be regarded as less serious than these recent cases involving both high profile celebrities like Stuart Hall and Saville and also ordinary members of the public as we have seen in the April Jones case and very recently in the sad case in Shropshire

I've always shyed away from playing Glitter tracks at my gigs on the grounds of public decency although I have always played Glitter Band music and will contine to do so but The Joan Jett cover is so good that I really do think I would feel quite comfortable in playing it - I'd be interested to know the thoughts of others

Getting back to Joan Jett herself I have always really loved her cover of the Tommy James and the Shondelles track 'Crimson and Clover' but I think that her cover of the GG track is actually as good if not even better Smile

Well... Glitter did do some serious crimes and is currently on police bail for the very same activities that Stuart Hall has been convicted of. There has been much outcry in the past when this song has been played (eg on Glee) but it seems to be usually by Americans who don't know any better.

There's nothing to stop the song being played though, and of course Jonathan King forced the BBC to stop cutting him and Glitter out of the TOTP repeats - the Savile scandal has, handily, given them the excuse to drop whole episodes instead.

But I wonder if Vintage TV have simply bought a job lot of tunes from the US and haven't been as diligent as the BBC have? There might be no agenda here other than simply playing what they've unwittingly bought.

The alternative suggestion is that the aging DJs and pop impresarios who run Vintage TV are helping out one of their own... but I'd best not go there.
