Richard Allinson is running a new feature on his daily show this week on BFBS Radio 2 entitled Music From The Commercials.

He played the Hollies and The Air That I Breathe-a fantastic song and then asked "Can you remember what this song advertised?"-I could not remember but of course the answer is Comfort- the Fabric Conditioner.

Can anyone advise of other great songs used in commercials.

Good thread Mark,

'Let's Face The Music And Dance' (Nat King Cole) where those managers are in the bog washing their hands at the mirror.

's funny that I can't remember WHAT the commercial was for, makes you wonder how effective advertising really is Confused

Barenaked Ladies' song "It's All Been Done" was on Argos ads for a few years. Must have been a nice little earner!

I love hearing my favourite bands pop up in commercials - like when They Might Be Giants did "Twisting" for Pizza Hut and "Clap Your Hands" for Gap.

Less obscure - the Guinness ad that used "We Have All The Time In The World" by Louis Armstrong was marvelous.

John, The various adverts which included 'Lets's face the music and dance ' was for one of the financial insurance places - AXA or the like.

Speaking of music for adverts. Why is it suddenly popular to use old Spike Jones tracks? I think it has to do with copyright, as some must be over 50 years old.

"I Can't Let Maggie Go" by Honeybus? - advertised Nimble (you know, the loaf that was 90% air and 10% bread) in the 1970s - probably one of the first ads I can remember.

I have noticed them too. But I think for records the copyright rule in USA is 75 years, and there might still also be a USA clause for composer royalties 50 years since death of composer, I'm not really sure, these things change all the time. I think the UK have stuck with the 50 years rules which starts to affect the early rock'n'roll music recorded/released in UK.

John, I think I need new eyes. I thought it was Sam, but for some unknown reason I kept seeing Groucho.

Long day no sleep.

Today's offering on the Richard Allinson show was Mama Cass and Dream a Little Dream of me-an advert for the Peugeot 406.

Keep them coming.

This was before ClassicFM. About 20 years ago a popular male fragrance was Blue Stratos featuring surfboarders on some very blue waves and the music was the now popular choral from Carmina Burana by Carl Orff.

It's now used for dramatic effect on shows like Soccer AM and late night silly shows.

Re-mix it with a few swear words thrown in, it'd probably win awards at the Brits Crying or Very sad

Was it Levis Jeans who introduced millions to Prokofiev's 'Romeo and Juliet' music, in particular the Montagues and Capulets dance of the knights?

Fiat Punto adverts with the Human League's "Don't you want me?" - although IIRC the lyrics were sung in an atrocious accent.

Peugeot 406s sold to the accompaniment of Berlin's "Take My Breath Away" and scenes of napalm-drenched fields.

The progressive rock band IQ used to do the Shake N' Vac song live!

Orange's cinema ad is now the one about the blackout, with a song off Joanne Newsom's 'Milk Eyed Mender'.

I've had the Spike Jones 'Hawaiian War Chant' from the Norwich Union ad going through my head all morning as well as the signature tune to 'Mio Mao', because it's on before the Wright Stuff!

On 2nd Feb Richard Allinson played the excellent Etta James song I want to make love to you-a song advertising Diet Coke.

This artist is an excellent vocalist.

Prior to escaping, I sufferred 'dancing on ice'. The first tune was 'diamonds are a girls best friend' reminds me of an old advert for whitworths dried fruit. It had the word Whitworths in place of diamonds and sowed a woman baking a fruit cake.
