I'm suroprised nobody's commented yet on the gap in the evennig schedule which will be caused by Radcliffe and Maconie moving to Radio Six (I'll be moving with them...)

This rips a two hour gap in Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday evenings.

How will Radio Two fill this gap? A new presenter(s)? An extension of the Chris Evans World Domination plan? Rearranging existing evening shows?

Hmmmm, looks like their selection of music output is being stifled before the show has even started ........... I mean, ONE Freeplay track per hours? That's nuts and means that R&M will have to play the usual playlist bobbins the rest of the time. Info here:

http://www.bbc.co.uk/commissioning/radio/network/docs/6music_radcliffe2011.pdf

They should have been allowed to keep their 2 hour shows on Radio 2 evenings, FOUR nights a week.

Curse you Bob Shennan, you've successfully dumbed down Radio 2 and I'll never forgive you for that.

I wouldn't go that far, though I don't agree with every decision he has made. Some of them have been appalling.

Fascinating document, Barty. It does make me wonder how many 'freeplays', R&M actually had on Radio 2 though.

It's quite amusing to see "the highly successful Chain feature" in black and white. As the lads say, it's just a record.

Nick.

I would expect that they had slightly more freedom, being post 7pm... but its not like the BBC are letting Mark & Stuart & Producer(s) make it up as they go along.

The music policy seems OK to me - it is afterall a daytime show, and 6 Music's playlist is generally quite good. Obviously the Chain should feature something different as well.

For those insterested, here's the commissoning document for Mark Radcliffe's new show.

The interesting bit is this:
Quote:
A weekly one hour live music programme featuring Mark's distinctive selection of new and classic music from his own
collection. Mark is a trusted guide to music and in this programme will feature a wide range covering guitar rock through to
folk, and the music will be supported by Mark's knowledge of the genres and his keen sense of humour. No live sessions, no
guests - Mark's show will be a chance to hear his take on popular music from today and yesterday.

This suggests Mark will have more freedom on R2 than 6Music - though I'm not sure how much input will be governed by various music policies, playlist or otherwise.

Some interesting contact details there.

I wonder if phoning or emailing his Bobness would rattle a few cages?

I'm fairly sure this has been touched upon before but woth remarking upon: I have emailed and written to the BBC to ask for a clarification of this interesting situation.

Dear sir/madam.

This is the text of an email I attempted to send to Radio Six today using the website’s “contact me” feature: because (as related below) I am unsure as to whether any emails I send are actually being received by the BBC, I am duly copying and sending by post in anticipation of a reply. A frank reply would be appreciated, as if what I suspect is correct, I will be making a more formal complaint.

Thank you

{{AgProv}}

Good afternoon!

I'm writing because on three occassions yesterday afternoon I attempted to send an email to the Radcliffe and Maconie programme. I understand and appreciate that not every email can be used on the show - that isn't a grievance - but I am concerned that I did not receive the usual automatic acknowledgement from the BBC that an email had been received. By contrast, later in the afternoon (after the end of Radcliffe and Maconie) I switched back to Radio Two and sent an email to the Steve Wright show. The automatic response was in my inbox seconds later.

I am therefore concerned that the Radcliffe and Maconie show did not receive my emails at all. The bottom of the automated response has a line about

"Please note that the BBC monitors e-mails sent or received.".

I have to inform you that following a dispute with the Radio Two messageboards last year, the BBC, in its infinite wisdom, chose to consider me an " an unacceptable editorial risk", informed me I was banned from all BBC talkboards and had no further right of appeal against the decision. (It only took them ten years to decide I was an “unacceptable editorial risk", but I digress...)

I am wondering, therefore, whether such a decision extends to preventing me from emailing shows and presenters as well as excluding me from all BBC-hosted internet talkboards. If the BBC setup is geared to recognising and excluding my email address as "persona non grata", would this also pick out any emails coming from my address and send them straight into the trash bin, without the show's production team even seeing them?

The fact that yesterday, I emailed Radcliffe and Maconie three times, using my email host, and I did not receive the standard acknowledgement, would seem to support this.

When I contacted the Steve Wright show I used a "contact us" format like this one, which was embedded into his BBC Radio Two website - and I received acknowledgement. This obviously bypassed my own email address, and left me wondering if, because of my BBC ban, is what your system fixes on when automatically monitoring emails from members of the public.

While I still refuse to accept the grounds for my being excluded from BBC messageboards, I'm not challenging that here. (wrong forum). I do, however, find it disturbing and rather infuriating it appears to extend to contacting shows and presenters via email. Can you confirm if this is the case, and provide assurance that the ban will no longer apply to general purposes of emailing BBC presenters - who then decide whether to use the submitted material or not, even that emanating from an "unacceptable editorial risk"? Whatever the rights and wrongs of my exclusion from BBC internet talkboards, I am still a licence-payer and should still be able to enjoy one of the services that licence brings – to be able to communicate with the entertainment shows my licence pays for! (I do wonder what the Daily Mail might make of this situation, if communicated to them…)

Thank you

{{Agprov}}

The substance of the email to Streve Wright was to compliment Chris Tarrant on being so much better than the usual bloke, btw..

I have been listening to R&M all week (anything other than Tarrant), whilst enjoying the show, I did grow a little tired and bored with it over five days.

I'm not so sure R&M can muster enough material to fill the show for three hours, five days a week, that's nine hours more a week than they have been used to (or seven before their hours were cut).

As well over 50% of their playlist is retro, it could well become a little repetitive over a period of time.

Having said that, I am really missing them in their old R2 slot which was perfect. Is it just another case of R2 fixing something was wasn't bust?

Or maybe its just me.

AgProv - Not all BBC e-mail addresses have an automatic reply set up; Like most of the 6 Music shows I've e-mailed before, Radcliffe and Maconie certainly don't. Most Radio 2 ones do (though not all).

I emailed them less than an hour ago and received an automated reply.

The automated one can sometimes fail or you email could perhaps have not reached the show.

That has happened to me when I've emailed the JV show using vine@bbc.co.uk which most of the time does give an automated response. As has been said before not all of the addresses do this. Stupid question but you did use the correct one?

We've been enjoying Radcliffe and Maconie on 6 Music this week. Certainly they seem to be getting appreciative calls from listeners all over the world. Someone rang to say they are now their breakfast listening ..... if only we could be so lucky. Crying or Very sad

Does anyone else dislike the seemingly tagged-on 'music news' segment? I really hate it - it feels like filler material, almost as if it has been imported from another show.

Terrible.

R&M are great for the rest of the show (although I'm finding that there's not as much banter as there used to be when they were on radio 2, even though they now have more time to chat - well, they would if less music was played).

That's interesting - I've e-mailed them successfully before (sent one last on Tuesday) and never received and automated reply even if they've read a message on air. But maybe they've only just set one up for 6 Music.

Yeah, it doesn't fit right. R&M already do a good section like this so it's not really needed.

Hopefully they'll get rid in a week or two when things settle.

I hope so too - R&M attempt to make intelligent conversation with the female reporter, but she keeps going back to her script then off at a total tangent with assorted rubbish interviews. This seems to waste almost half an hour of the show.
