I've emailed but I imagine it was a waste of my time.

Like other fans I guess I'll just follow our favourite presenters wherever they end up.

Since when has the BBC listened to the licence payers? You would be wasting your time.

It was the beginning of the end for Radcliffe and Maconie when their show was truncated last year to make way for the pointless In Concert.

Short and sweet. http://www.bbc.co.uk/iplayer/episode/b00yjt8v/Feedback_18_02_2011/

He talked of Radcliffe and Maconie's move to 6Music, as I suspected, in terms of developing the digital medium and increasing audience share. No comment on the appointment of Jo Whiley as replacement.

In response to the Trust's request to increase the appeal of programming to the over-65s he said that it is not and never has been the intention to target a specific [narrow] demographic. Recent programmes like Len Goodman, Desmond Carrington and Brian Matthew's Dance Band Years were developed with the request in mind but to have broad appeal across the whole audience. The latest RAJAR figures showed that the proportion of listeners over 55 had increased.

Contrary to the impression given, Mark Lemarr departed on good terms, and it's not beyond the realms of possibility that he will do work for R2 again. He had wanted an earlier time slot for his show, which could not be found.

And against the charge of increasing blandness, and appointment of presenters with a (perceived) lack of musical knowledge (citing Graham Norton replacing JR) he pointed out that both had been contracted on the basis of their entertainment value.

I still think Radcliffe & Maconie were sent to 6 Music because Shennan D'oh didn't like Nemone being pregnant every year (so it seemed).

Whilst I didn't listen to Bob earlier this week on Feedback I am pleased to note from fellow posters on this thread, that he mentioned that Mark Lamarr might return to the station at some point in the future.

Have to say his comments on Jonathan Ross were complete bollocks. Rossy had live music almost every week and an interesting, varied choice of tracks - how can Shennan say he wasn't into music or had no musical knowledge?

On the rare occasion that I listened to Ross - in the last couple of years at least - I gained the distinctive impression that the only artist he knew anything about was David Bowie.

I think the real reason he's moved R&M to 6 music is purely because DAB is dying on its backside.

I regularly posted news articles about DAB lies and misleading statistics - many of which came from the BBC - on the old R2 messageboard. Some got left but many got deleted.

Here's an interesting one:

BBC audience: DAB less tasty than leftover turkey
http://www.theregister.co.uk/2010/12/15/bbc_dab_radio_research/

or Radio amnesty fails to lift DAB
http://www.theregister.co.uk/2010/10/28/rajar_dab_scrappage_stephen_fry/

and Ofcom enlists 4-year-olds to boost dodgy DAB stats
http://www.theregister.co.uk/2010/08/05/ofcom_dodgy_dab_dossier/

DAB is a disaster. People just don't really care about it, particularly the effort required to get it into cars. Car manufacturers occasionally offer a DAB radio as an extra or on a special edition model, and internet and 3G radio is poised to overtake it.

It reminds me very much like SKY in the early days. They took The Simpsons, Moonlighting, football and a few other programmes and shows in order to get people to buy dishes and take up satellite TV. I think Shennon has done the same, deliberately put R&M on there to boost flagging sales in order to allow the government to commence with their plan to switch off analogue.

You may well be right, but surely most listeners to Radcliffe and Maconie will be unable to listen at their new time, I certainly wouldn't even consider buying a DAB conversion for my car, as thats where I'm most likely to be when they are on.

Would it not have been better to just move them to 6Music but keep them at their current time slot, or even extend it? If the push to DAB was the desired intention.

As far as misleading stats re DAB go, didn't FM actually outsell DAB last year, but as the sales included mobile phones and Ipods with FM radios they decided not to count such product types as they didn't suit the 'agenda'.

I'm sure you're right about FM outselling DAB last year, I can't recall where I read it though.

I've been thinking the exact same thing.

Still, if it's part of Shennan's plan to get more people to invest in DAB radios then I think he's on a hiding to nothing - I for one will simply listen to R&M on iPlayer (or whatever Radio ends up on when it moves from iPlayer in the near future).

Sorry Bob, but there's no way that I'm investing in the utter waste of money and resources that is DAB (Doesn't Always Broadcast).

To be fair, it's not Shennan's policy but is has been the BBC's and also the government's (well, the previous party in government) for some time now. Thankfully, plans for DAB expansion and the phasing out of FM are now on the back-burner.

Well, most DAB radios (and all 3 that we have here) still retain FM facility as well as DAB. So sales stats should include both. And, think about it, FM will likely therefore outsell DAB if FM-only outsell DAB-only?

I think these were FM only ones John.

They are still widely available, I bought one last year, which has a programmable cassette recorder which was reasonable and will double as an alarm clock. I and many other people who are against the switchover do not want to enhance the listening figures of something that doesn't work for them by buying one!

Helen - the previous government's plan to phase out FM has now been reversed (or, at least, put on the back-burner) so the threat is reduced somewhat.

Yes I know Colin!

Strangely I've discovered at least some DAB radios will work in my house as my decorator/plumber has had Radio 7 blairing at full blast for the last week! He did that reception in his van outside my house was poor on a different radio though so it's obviously a bit hit and miss.

My husband loves R&M in the evenings, they keep him company when he's in his little flat down south during the week. He's not happy.

I am, cos I will be able to listen to them in the afternoons instead of Wrighty. He can't even record them to listen to.

He's going to have to rely on his iPod.

I have to confess that I don't listen to R&M as much as I should do, but I do agree with you in that the show has been well worth tuning into in the evenings. I have only listened to the broadcast (as opposed to iPlayer playback) when driving, often from London back to MK on the M1, and their ramblings and wildly off-topic musings have been perfect listening at that time of day.

The shift to 6 Music on DAB means that I can't listen in the car any more for two reasons: I don't have DAB in the car and DAB reception is generally hopeless in cars anyhow!

I'll have to grab it on my iPhone using the TuneIn Radio and play the recording in the car instead, but it's not the same is it?

Such a shame.........

I'd guess he doesn't have the time Barty. Unless you have Sky+ or equivalent it's not that easy if you are at work.

Now he will start to talk about music pretending he's interested. It's only the management talking to the producers of the GNS - asking him to do this. Rolling Eyes

I guess it simply depends on what kind of radio you like at that time of day. What I respect about the pair is their knowledge of music and musicians, so if they're given the space the ramble then ramble they will. They have certainly offered something very different to most of the run-of-the-mill stuff that R2 serves up.

I'd be surprised if there wasn't a way to (legally) download them from the BBC's Radio site.

Whilst podcasts are, by their very nature, downloadable they can only contain content that the BBC owns outright or is licensed to offer for download. That's why they rarely include the kind of music that's featured in many shows.

The only way to save streamed shows is to somehow capture the stream as it happens (ie: recording) and that has to be done in real time, unfortunately. There are programmable desktop apps that facilitate timer-recording of output which can then be saved as - for instance - MP3 and moved to another device; I'm getting into the habit of setting timers on my iPhone using TuneIn Radio for exactly this purpose and am finding it really useful.

However, the BBC isn't yet allowed to offer for download complete programmes containing 3rd-party copyright content unless it's harnessed by Digital Rights Management encoding such as that used in iPlayer where downloads are permitted.
