As Gaddafi country is falling around him he's spoken out saying - " I'm a warrior, not afraid of anyone, and will die as a martyr. He's very dangerous and should be removed.

I wasn't aware that Gaddafi has ever been a friend of the West

Remember the Libyan Peoples Bureau and the shooting of PC Yvonne Fletcher a few years ago not to mention the Lockerbie bombing and all the sucking up the previous Government did to get in the good books of this tyrannical maniac

The only person Gaddafi looks after is Gaddafi

Marko, what is a "maryta"? Also, have you thought of a Diplomatic career? They need plain-speaking people! Wink

Dyslexia Rules...KO Smile

Other boards make allowances for people's eccentric spelling and/or typing errors, and everyone here makes them, not just Mark. We know what he means - and that is open to argument - I just think it's wrong to harp on about the spelling.

Why don't they get Ryan Air to get the Brits out, they don't leave their planes on the ground for ten hours like UKplc did yesterday

I don’t understand why Cameron is saying we need to learn a few lessons from this. We used to be the best in the world at this sort of thing- we know how to do it already- it just takes balls and equipment! Sadly, we seem to be lacking in both. The excuses coming out yesterday were the sort of thing you’d expect from Belgium on a rainy Sunday afternoon- well, we’re having a bit of trouble with the chartered airline, our plane isn’t working but we’re working as fast as we can to fix it, our pilots are scared to go there! Rubbish!! Get in there, get them out. Just cancel BA flights and use those planes until everyone is back. Use a pile of C130s, get some Chinooks in there. I’m sure the passengers won’t complain about the lack of coffee and stewardesses, just do it, sort it, stop fannying about.

There’s never an Aircraft Carrier around when you need one is there? What’s that? There always used to be. Oh yeah but that’s when the world was an unstable dangerous place- there’s no need for that sort of thing now. Idiots! I’m embarrassed to be British.

I wonder what Tony Blair is really thinking just now.

Remember those "recent" pictures of him hugging Gaddifi.

That would be a grand spectacle, wouldn't it - the Irish having to rescue the British! (Even BA is no longer British Embarassed )

I seem to recall that, decades ago, there was some unpleasantness in Aden (now part of Yemen), and the Royal Yacht Britannia was in the vicinity and deployed to rescue our citizens.

The sad fact is that we no longer have the resources, or the pull, or the nous, to act quickly and decisively in such circumstances. The present Government hasn't exactly excelled itself in this latest incident, but it has been left with an empty purse, empty hangers and empty heads abroad by its predecessor.

you may jest but the but if it wasn't for the war monger Gadaffi (funny saying war monger in the same sentence as gadaffi and it not being him) would have still got his nuclear program

Thanks to there being a lot of XTC fans on a Genesis board I frequent, I've had the 'Gadaffi duck' line from Merely A Man in my mind because of this news!

Funny thing is, much of the general public (you know, the ones who are force fed a diet of X-Factor, The Sun, Big Brother and Greggs mince pies) still think the UK armed forces can do all the same sort of stuff they've done for the last 30 years, re-taking the Falklands, Gulf War I and II, protecting our missile subs, etc. and still have spare airframes knocking around to rescue Brits abroad when the sh1t hits the fan.

God knows where those two C-130s were whistled up from - presumably our boys and girls in the sandpit are going without some supplies since the truckies have been diverted to Malta. Our AT fleet is stretched pretty much to breaking point at the moment and this isn't helping. Was anyone aware that the Type 23 frigate HMS Cumberland was heading home from the Med to be paid off when it was diverted to Benghazi? That hasn't been reported in the media AFAIK.

Much emphasis was made during an interview on R5L this morning about how Cumberland and her sister York (which is also now tasked in the Gulf of Sirte) would be able to stave off air attacks with their SAM systems, capable of downing aircraft 40 miles away. Trouble is, the RN had two carriers with organic air defence back in '82 and we still lost vessels to enemy air. Now we've binned the SHAR and GR.9 fleet, the carrier that's still available has no fixed-wing interceptors to fly off it and I'm sure we have no pointy-nosed jets anywhere near Malta capable of protecting C-130 rescue missions into the desert, so the truckies are incredibly vulnerable to MANPADs or any Libyan AF jets flown by merc pilots still in theatre. Doesn't take a huge amount to down a Herc if there's no risk of retaliation.

That's the trouble with cost-savings led defence "reviews" - the real world has a habit of biting you in the a$$ only a short time after the chopping is completed. Thatcher found this out in '82 (although to be fair many of the proposed cuts/sales hadn't gone through) - now the ConDemns are paying the price for not learning the lessons of recent history.

It seems a rather bundled mission flying in the SAS and a diplomat to try and make contact opposition leaders. I thought the SAS are experienced. I think MOD bosses will have some red faces, as well as the british government. I wouldn't like to think what the US will say about it all.

It reminds me of a Chuck Norris film.
