In those shows where there are audiences, there does seem always to be a 'whistling Rufus' in the audience when a 'turn' is being applauded after they've finished performing these days. There was a particulaly loud & shrill example of this on Friday evening's show about Lionel Bart. To the point where I had to stop listening. I feel sorry for anyone who was unfortunate enough to have been seated in close proximity to this person and wonder if their ear drums are still intact!! I will consign such 'whistling Rufuses' to 'Room 101' with immediate effect for the sake (& safety) of everyone elses ear drums. Perhaps a solution should be to build a sound proof room in auditoriums where these 'whistling Rufuses' would be seated with a video screen to watch the show on so that everyone else can enjoy said show and also the next one they go to!!

Lord Elpus - it was the whistling Rufuses and the whooping idiots that put me off the Ruth Jones chat show after 10 minutes!

TV ads that have no relation to what they are plugging. Lee Mack did a routine based around the meaninglessness/pretention of perfume ads!

And I'll also nominate the new Butlin's ad - what the hell has a green dinosaur singing Kansas's Dust In The Wind got to do with holidays? Point Of Know Return could relate to a poky airport in Jersey, but that relates to Jet 2!

The purpose of any media advertising is to raise awareness of a product or brand to the point where it increases turnover for the advertiser, so if such techniques are commonplace they must work!

(And, of course, you're discussing them and not "ordinary" ads for cornflakes or toothpaste, etc, are you not!) Smile

Eliza Nepotism, I mean Doolittle is one cert for Room 101. Daughter of Frances Ruffelle, granddaughter of Sylvia Young - she's paid her dues all right!

If it's not enough hearing the godawful Pack Up on Real Radio, they've featured the equally infuriating Skinny Jeans with that whistle!

James Corden and Fearne Cotton fawning over Justin Bieber on the BRITS.

Give him a little more time and maybe he'll have a job doing front of house at an arts centre in Headingley (my boss is equally brilliant at fawning over newbies until the time when they slip up)!

Re:Rastamouse - young kids have always emulated characters on TV, as Stephen Fry commented on Room 101!

His complaint was that a lot of teenagers used the upward inflection in their speech as a result of watching Australian soaps - there is a woman where I work who does that a lot!

I'm expecting that the Daily Mail don't like Armstrong & Miller's pilot characters using street slang either.

Insensitive twonks who laugh in that 'hey, everyone, look at me' way in the back of a pub - last week it happened when my boss was still upset over the news that one of her team had died.

Does anyone else remember the track on the Bonzos' Let's Make Up & Be Friendly album, where there is this sad organ part (think of the music that used to back Simon Mayo's Confessions spot on Radio 1), and there's this unsettling, sudden laugh going on throughout?

How odd you should say that because we had one such instance last night in our pub. There was a bunch of blokes who came in after watching the rugby and one of them had the loudest, most false laugh you could imagine - and it hurt my ears! Thankfully they we're in for long.

Colin, the woman in the pub I went to was JUST LIKE THAT!

I'm also reminded of the scene in One Foot In The Grave where Victor's in a restaurant and there's a man on another table talking really loudly to his mates - Victor tells him to shut the hell up, though not in those words.

Curb Your Enthusiasm had a similar scene, only Larry David's in a restaurant being put off his meal by a noisy oik shouting down a mobile phone.

I remember that episode. My wife calls me "Victor" when I'm in one of those "I don't bloody believe it" moods! Smile

The other day I was reflecting vocally on how lazy people are after they've left MacDonald's and throw their packaging out of car windows. My wife, although agreeing with me, said "Yes Victor. Thank you Victor".

Cilla Black pontificating about the current tsunami in Japan on Loose Women - haven't the victims suffered enough?

Every discussion I've seen and heard today, in addition to the multitude of tweets on Twitter, etc., all have the same "Oooh, isn't it awful?" theme. Next thing they're discussing really important stuff like hair, make-up, this year's must-have fashions, etc. And that's the just the blokes!

1) your irritating insect, you are probably a very interesting person Colin, but your insect drives me krazy, sorry!

2) Chris Evans

3) that woman on instead of Sarah Kennedy, does she never shut up, a whole 5 tracks played between the news at six and 6:30; and no traffic report!

Barkingbiker's post has inspired me to put Bob Shennan into Room 101 for continuing Lesley Douglas' bad work in all but taking Radio 2 away from me.
