In 48 hours, nearly half the British mass media could be bought by one of the world's worst media moguls.
Rupert Murdoch has exploited his vast media empire to push war in Iraq, elect George W Bush, spread resentment of muslims and immigrants, and block global action on climate change. He undermines democratic government across the world by threatening elected leaders with vicious and often false media coverage unless they do his bidding.
Britain plays a key role in Europe and the world. If Murdoch has a lock on British media, he will use it to undermine UK, EU and UN support for human rights and democracy. The UK is up in arms over the Murdoch bid, and even the government, elected with Murdoch's help, is split down the middle as it makes a decision this week. Global solidarity bolstered Egypt's pro-democracy protesters -- it can help Britain's. Let's build an urgent global outcry to stop Rupert Murdoch. Sign the petition to Prime Minister Cameron and Deputy Prime Minister Clegg!

I don’t really know enough about this guy to decide whether he is good or bad, there’s some quite sweeping allegations there, Colin. If he is this big all controlling media mogul guy then maybe the allegations you’ve made (or quoted), are just fictitious ones from other less successful media moguls who want to climb up his ladder-surely if he was this all-controlling media guy there wouldn’t be any bad press about him- if he can get a President elected in the US then he could easily make it seem like he’s the most decent chap on the planet – so I don’t get it. I don’t know, but if we can’t trust the Murdock Media, what makes other Media organisation any more trustworthy? They’re all staffed with the same sort of people with similar qualifications from the same educational establishments; they’ve all been subjected to the same educational and professional doctrine throughout their careers. They all have the same drive and motive. Individual journalists in any organisation are just as likely to put their career before the truth, whoever they work for. One must treat almost everything we read in the press or see on the TV with a cautious awareness that we’re probably being manipulated. When reading the paper, try to extract the facts but leave the opinion on the pages. |

My text is a pull-quote from the page to which the URL links, Rachel.
Personally, I prefer to believe it all. It's the far safer option. |

Too late! Murdoch has taken over the world, henceforth to be called "The Murdoch". We are all Murdochians. Resistance is futile! _________________ MiS |

So Murdoch has agreed to sacrifice Sky News. Big deal! I reckon this was Jeremy Hunt's plan (careful how you pronounce his surname) all along - with Cameron's backing, of course. After all, they need to keep Murdoch onside just like Blair did in 1997.
What next? Sky News to be rebranded Fox Europe (god help us) and then a merger with (aka takeover of) a privatised BBC News Channel?
Anything's possible, as we're seeing all the time! |
