Oh John,
You may have started some old family problems here. I remember my Grandmother recollected him VERY fondly. She had a thing about Crooners.
Any idea if he had a romance with Caroline M?
Going to ask the family now, may be some time.
Please don't paste a Womble as an Atavar, I went out with the Bass player many years ago.

The romances of Sam Costa?

I only know that around 1939 he married Esther Comer, and they were married over 40 years till he died in 1981.

Younger members likely know nothing about Sam. Light Programmers may remember him. After his crooning days his Light Programme radio fame began in the ITMA shows with Tommy Handley, then he worked with Kenneth Horne, Richard Murdoch and Maurice Denham in 'Much Binding In The Marsh'. On Sundays he did both Breakfast Time and Glamorous Nights and he also presented (and into Radio 2) 'Housewives' Choice' and 'Midday Spin'. He'd sign off saying 'Thank you for the pleasure of your company'. He didn't like TV work much but did appear on several 'Juke Box Jury' shows.

On Radio 2 he had various shows, morning, lunchtime, afternoon, drivetime, into the late 1970's.

Does anyone remember an actor called Mario Fabrizi, who was reckoned to be a double for Sam Costa? He came to public notice in the Army Game on ITV and was in several episodes of the TV version of Hancock's Half Hour. Alas, he died young and seems to be all but forgotten now.

Ian.
