Did anyone read Captain Chris’ new column in Live Magazine – it’s the TV mag that comes with the MoS. I’m not sure if it’s a regular thing (I do hope so) but it was jolly interesting. I was pleased to read Chris has bought a Lotus Elan- it’s a really nice one too: at last- you see! You don’t need to spend zillions to drive a gut wrenching, gas guzzling, global warming, screaming death machine.

Anyway if you'd like to read it, it's here...

Come on Rachel - what do you take us for? Evans AND the Daily Dregs mentioned in the same sentence????

I guess they're well suited to each other, but............

Shocked

Oh, I like the MoS - I don't much care for the Daily Mail but the Sunday one is ok in the main- you miss all the good stuff- there was an interesting piece about Mariella Frostrup too but that was in the other free magazine.

You didn't ghost-write it for him by any chance, Rachel? Laughing

Simon Mayo's column in the Daily Telegraph didn't last very long. Well written but too mundane - he doesn't hobnob so much with the rock gods and golfing fraternity.

Mariella has an agony-aunt column in the Observer - serious stuff.

Rachel, I'm getting worried about your Evans postings. More worried than I am about Colin's Evans postings Question

I actually believe Colin's opinions about Evans ARE his opinions about Evans, but Rachel's postings are unbelievable Razz

An outsider might wonder which of the two is a troll Wink

Not really.

The difference is that Rachel actually only comments on the shows and DJs she listens to, or intends to listen to - principally Alex Lester, Chris Evans and Jeremy Vine, and creates a discussion around specific events on those programmes. Further, she will criticise them when she feels something is not right (though I can't think of an instance with Alex Very Happy )

Other people comment upon shows and DJs they don't listen to, and insisit on dropping such comments into every possible conversation in the top half (and sometimes the bottom half) of the board.

As far as I'm aware the latter illustration is more akin to trolling.
I have said many times that the anti-Evans barracking is overdone - it's repetitive to the point of boredom and it's counter-productive - but I'm reasonably content for Colin, ruddles etc to carry on doing it if it makes them happy.

Now you could argue that this particular item might have been better in the Coffee Bar, since it is not related to his Radio 2 activities, but to say that it's trolling is absurd.

That's not true. You're implying that some users here only comment on those aspects of programming they don't favour. Look through some of my recent posts and you'll see evidence (quite a lot of evidence, actually) to the contrary. It's the same for Ruddles, Helen and others.

And if it makes you happy to constantly moan about it then that's fine. However, consider that John's board is called "The Radio 2 Preservation Society". In other words, it doesn't exist solely to discuss what a given presenter had for breakfast or what music they happened to play today. There are other issues up for discussion, too. One of those ongoing issues is the quality of (or lack of) management; in my opinion the station towards whose budget we all contribute is being allowed to drop its standards. I see no reason why those who feel that to be the case shouldn't use John's facility here to voice such concerns - especially when there's a chance that some execs who happen to google on R2 related keywords might be looking in.

If John doesn't think that's an appropriate use of his forum then it's for him to decide - as indeed it is for him to determine what is "trolling" and what isn't.

I'm glad you started the post Rachel!!!
You should never be afraid of posting about things you like, and I love your wackiness and positivity too.
Have to say I'm not so sure about your Leona Lewis track of the day though!!! Give me Edith from "Allo Allo" over her any day.

No I am not. I would have used the word "only" if I was to accuse you of that.

At least I only do it in response to comments which are moaning about him.

I don't disagree with you on that. But should any BBC execs happen to look in I'm afraid they will dismiss this board (as the DJs already do) because it appears to be so negative all the time and because it is on the face of it an unrepresentative and tiny minority of the millions of listeners.

It is, as you say, John's board. It has been my favourite forum for the four years it has been in existence. I just think it is wrong to accuse the one person who injects life and humour into the board of trolling just because she champions Chris Evans and his presentation of the breakfast show and wishes to discuss other things he does, as reported, or written in his own column, in the national press.

Hang on a minute, I'm not having a go at Rachel. She knows I love her! Razz

I merely highlighted the fact that she made reference to him in the same context as a link to the Daily Trash and pointed out that I could understand the connection.

And I haven't accused anyone of Trolling, either. I don't even like the stupid term!

Well I haven't accused anyone of being a troll. My posting was intended to be a light-hearted observation, or a moment to wonder what an outsider would think of the two corners of this forum, hence the Razz and the Wink

Nice photo of troll!

I don't think there are currently any trolls on this forum

It's important to be constantly vigilant though which was proved by what happened a few weeks ago

Although we have our disagreements now and again I have nothing against Rachel as a human being and generally speaking this is a very well functioning forum and a very well moderated one Smile

How could you ever inspire anyone or be the spark for anything good to happen if you always have to worry about upsetting people who might feel insignificant in the whole scheme of things because they see everything as a barrier rather than a fun climb?

I don't care for Evans, but I've passed the link on to the Genesis fans' Turn It On Again board because it's definitely Mike Rutherford the greying whinger's playing golf with early on.

I choose not to listen to Evans, but after being force fed endless trailers for the dross that is his show I feel like I do listen, he even forms the major part of the TV trailers for R2. Do we get as many trailers for Bruce, Vine, Wright, Mayo or R&M? I think not.

This guy is forced on us, a kind of brainwashing by the powers that be (Evan's mite in the industry may have something to do with it) but I can resist, I can see him for what it is.

I'm still pretty p'd off that the BBC cannot offer what should be an appropriate Breakfast Show for that network, and for turning a once decent TV show (The One Show) into another no go zone.

Colin, you'd have to read the content of the link, then you'd understand but since you don't want to read the link, you'll remain ignorant of the content. They're kind of mutually dependant- like knowing what's in a book and reading it. Smile

Disagree, the loss of Bleakley and Chiles (wonder why they left?), was the beginning of the end, the new presenters have no kudos, especially the current female incumbent.

Me too.

John, can you make more use of the light-hearted observations? I thought you were being serious, despite the smilies, because we don't see enough of them.

Apologies for over-reacting.
I am only seeking to defend the right of anyone/everyone to say they like a certain presenter (Rachel....Evans; SantaFe....Wright) without the avalanche of scorn and questioning of their motives which is sometimes apparent here. I would do the same if someone started a thread praising Alan Carr (heaven forbid, but I would! Laughing )

As for moaning, and moaning about moaning...
It does no good. I promise I will stop.

(Apologies also for the bad taste in trolls. He was bought nearly 40 years ago, on my first solo holiday abroad, to Norway. It was about the only thing that was affordable, even then.)
