Actually I think census news coverage has been rather low-profile this time.

Does anybody know what Question 17 on the Individual Questionnaire was as it has been left blank?

You aren't supposed to fill it in until 27th March Mark......................

Question 17 is blank on ours (O/H says so I've not looked)

It won't be the last ever census Mark but I don't think that's what you meant

I don't really think they can avoid sending out hard copies of census forms quite simply because although most of us here could complete ours on line there are still a significant number of households who are not on line for one reason or another and there are many older people who still prefer to rely on the old paper documents

If you are going to threaten that people will be fined for non completion of the census form it simply isn't possible to abolish the right for people to fill in a paper document and post it back

What I don't quite understand is that I've just watched Channel 4 News and they said that the census forms were being posted out today so why is it that so many people have already received them?

Is this yet another case of media misinformation or has the Royal Mail suddenly gone into turbo mode Confused

The Royal Mail would have already got them ready to post out from today onwards. The Royal mail gets paid for this.

Yes Mark I understand that but how could people have already received them if they were only posted out today

The next delivery is tomorrow morning

Correct they were posted today. The Government would have already issued them to each sorting office in advance. I wonder if they do spot checks at random if you have given false information? Seems rather time consuming at a cost.

Mark I'm sorry but I've no idea what you mean???

The whole object is for them all to be filled out on 27th March. Looking at it morbidly someone could die between now and then and on the other hand babies will be borne making those (and yours if you've already sent it off) completely inaccurate.

If Mark has completed his online already then the online facility must be active now, yeah?

If people listened to the news correctly. They said " It's been posted to each house hold from Monday" That would mean you will receive it from 7/3/11 onwards.

Well it's totally inaccurate if he's filled it in already as I've said lower down John.

Surely the whole point of having a Census is that a snapshot is taken on one particular day. Mark, have you really already done yours? If so, I am astonished that the facility is there before the due date. Shambles? Rolling Eyes

Mark, if the official statement said that the census forms have 'been posted out to every household from Monday' the earliest they could be delivered would be this morning ie Tuesday and I was simply posing the question with that being the case why did some people apparently receive them on Monday ie Yesterday

Royal Mail does not deliver items the same day so what is so difficult to understand about that

It's not me who has failed to read the statement properly Confused

Maybe they were delivered in bulk to sorting offices in the early hours of yesterday and were then put in with normal mail.

We had ours delivered yesteday and it had on the label 'walk sort'.

My postman (who delivered our form this morning) told me that the Census forms arrived at main sorting offices by the truckload over the weekend and were pushed through the system in batches. That would explain the staggered deliveries, starting Monday morning.

Sorry, but Mark's got it right here.

"Posted to every household from Monday" is correct, as they were sent from Head Office in advance so that the Royal Mail could start posting to every household from Monday.

If it had said "delivered to Royal Mail from Monday" or "posted from Head Office from Monday" then you could expect households to receive them from Tuesday.

Sorry to be pedantic Ian but I disagree

If the wording had said 'Delivered to every household from Monday' one would reasonably conclude that deliveries to households would start on Monday

On the other hand if the wording says 'Posted out to every household from Monday' this to me suggests that the posting out happens on Monday with the forms arriving at the households the next working day

Am I going completely mad or does anyone else interpret it in the same way as me?

I think it's a case of sloppy language having been used in this case Sad

But that's not what it said. You've added an "out"

Wrong Ian, I haven't added an 'out'

The word 'out' was quoted by Mark in his original statement at the start of this thread and my posts were based on what he said

Anyway even if one omits the word 'out' the phrase 'Posted to every household from Monday' means sent by post to every household from that day in which case the forms would not arrive any earlier than the next working day

Quod Errat Demonstrandum as they used to say in my old school Smile

It is. It accepted mine on-line today. Received the forms in the post this morning.

Doesn't that defeat the object though?

It seems silly, doesn't it Helen? Perhaps they're opening the online portal early to avoid a crash on the day itself......

It does appear to defeat the whole object of having a "census day" though.
