I've just finished a book titled "Shiprocked" by Steve Conway, which details the author's time in the early 1980's spent aboard Radio Caroline's Ross Revenge. It is a fascinating insight of the trials and tribulations endured by the on-board personnel and the land based staff who all contributed in keeping Caroline alive on the high sea, until,of course, it capsized during a North Sea storm. A great read which did manage to bring a small tear to the eyes. _________________ Nilbert Zilbert

The Ross Revenge didn't capsize - it ran aground but was pulled off and survives today at Tilbury. It was the Mi Amigo that capsized and sank - in March 1980. |

Capsize, sink, whatever! The result was the same-offshore broadcasting from Caroline stopped. Have you read the book yet Colin? _________________ Nilbert Zilbert

Well, "capsize" and "sink" are different from running aground! Anyhow, the Ross Revenge ran aground on the notorious Goodwin Sands in November 1991, not the early 80s.

Not this one (which is the most recent of several books on the subject) but I've read others by more authoritative people like Tom Lodge and Peter Moore.
By the way, for anybody interested in the background to what is arguably Britain's best radio station, see http://www.radiocaroline.co.uk |

Blimey! Do you both want to put me in the stocks and chuck wet sponges at me for my misdemeanour?!
It doesn't really matter when or where the Ross Revenge ran aground, sank, exploded or got abducted by Martians, it was the end of an era. Which was the only point I was making. If you re-read my original posting, I didn't state that the Ross Revenge ran aground in the early 80's, only that Steve Conway had been broadcasting on Caroline then and was one of the "caretakers" on board on that fateful day.
I have ordered a further 3 books from Kent libraries on pirate radio and hope to enjoy them as much as "Shiprocked" _________________ Nilbert Zilbert

For the record, the Ross didn't get abducted by Martians.
The best book on the subject is the one by Tom Lodge - well worth a read. It's also worth checking out some of the DVDs for sale in Caroline's website.
It's interesting that, despite being on the air in one form or another since Easter Sunday 1964, Radio Caroline is still the best radio station in the UK by a long (nautical) mile.
In my opinion, of course! But then again I'm biased....... |

Those nice people at Kent libraries got me a copy of Tom Lodge's book which I picked up last week and have started reading. Further comments once I have finished it. _________________ Nilbert Zilbert

Well. I finished it last night and on first reading I can't say it's the best book I have read on the pirate radio era. The chapter where Tom interviewed the Beatles was too long, banal and frankly rather childish. I can't decide whether this book is a factual history of Caroline or an autobiography. Also, why no mention at all of Johnnie Walker? Obviously not much love lost between JW and TL? Next on my reading list is Keith Skues' tome "Pop went the Pirates". _________________ Nilbert Zilbert
