I think that if the BBC does go ahead with such a plan it could be the death knell for News 24

From what I can see the BBC has great difficulty finding enough information to feed a 24 hours a day news channel but the BBC 2 idea would allow sufficient time for in depth analysis of news without the constant repetition we now see on News 24 which many viewers find rather boring so it may be seen in some quarters as a good idea

I'm not offering an opinion one way or the other and of cousre there is always the possibility that the BBC is simply floating the idea via the press to see what reaction it prompts and if the reaction is bad then in all probability the idea will just quietly be dropped

It doesn't surprise me in the least. It might coincide with the merger of R2 and 6Music I suppose.

Every time I turn on News 24 it goes to sport, perhaps I would have better luck if it was on BBC 2 instead!

Oh no, BBC 2 is about the only channel I watch regularly and I certainly don't want it filled with the mind numbingly repetitive News 24.
I only see BBC2 after 5.30 apart from Fridays but I bet loads of people enjoy watching during the day.

What worries me is the impact all these Tory-imposed plans will have on BBC3 and BBC4 - the two most innovative BBC TV channels we have at the moment. They're minority interest channels - so they'll have to go. Can't have any of that non-populist stuff!

I agree about BBC4, but 'Snog, Marry, Avoid' & 'Hotter Than My Daughter' innovative? I don't think so, I could go on, the channel is full of tosh and can go tomorrow, nobody will miss it. Leave the sort of stuff it peddles to ITV2. The nation is already 'dumbed down' we don't need the national broadcaster to assist the decay.

BBC4 really is what BBC2 used to be, and ought to be.

Its funny that every time the BBC announces that its going to close a station, it goes back on that decision, 6 was saved, and there is now talk of saving the Asian Network.

If there is the need, as far as I'm concerned all the following can go as long as what remains is quality broadcasting, leave the other stuff to the independents.

BBC3
Radio 1xtra
Asian Network
6 Music as it is doesn't fill the void for the older listener.
Radio 7/4 xtra
Cbeebies (why the need for two kids channels?)

Use BBC News 24 for all news bulletins, why have different presenters on BBC1, BBC3 and 4 all at the same time ?

I think your list is just about right kengeo. I've said for years nowthat the BBC has overstretched itself,it tries to be all things to everyone and fails miserably and this results in a drop of standards in what should be it's core elements.
The money that could be saved by losing all these superfluous channels could and should be poured into making the main channels better than they are now.
As the saying goes "sometimes less is more" .

The fact that it's different from the mainstream and that it exists to try out new styles of programming aimed at an audience that's slightly left-of-field. There's room to experiment with new programme-making styles and genres on BBC3 that doesn't exist on the more mainstream channels. A lot of stuff that's become popular on BBC and then BBC1 was piloted first on BBC3, after all.

I take your point Colin, about BBC3 and BBC4 being places for experimentation etc but surely that was what BBC2 used to be like (and even BBC1 sometimes), before both the main channels became crammed with cheap cookery and "reality" documentaries etc.

If the BBC cut it's cloth a bit then it could use the money to improve the QUALITY on the main channels and dish all the dross.

I mean recently we've had Master Chef - a cookery show! occupying an hour of peak time viewing on TWO nights a week!!
