Royal Mail are to cut 3,500 jobs as part of modernisation. Part of the job cuts mean 1000 sorting office jobs could go. Although the figure is slightly misleading there has been rumours it's closer to 1,700 people. That larger figure could relect on those Senior jobs who have already left the company. Also another blow is the shares which the Royal mail staff own are Worthless.

In fact, you're riding high in April and shot down in May. Amazing really.

This is a blow to people claiming benefit in rural areas.

Absolutely Colin but if they go ahead with these cuts do you think they'll be back on top by June?

I thought the Tory's were going to halt Post office closures when they came into office? They are now talking about taking Road Tax and two or three other key services away from the counter. Mmmm making them less cost effective, so either they will close or it will cost us more to keep them open

I always make a special point of taxing all the family cars at the Post Office even though my local one does not offer this facility

I refuse to do it on line because it's vital that the Post Office network is maintained especially for rural communities where people really depend on their local Post Office

We already have 25 village pubs closing every week (down from 40 a couple of years ago but obviously from a lower starting point) and rural communities need to keep a focal point

As I may have said before several months ago I came across a Post Office in a pub and I think that's an idea which justifies closer investigation and I'd happily volunteer to do it Very Happy

IF we are to commit to post offices then why do all we hear about is taking their services away one by one. Yes they are subsidised but the more services they take away the less efficient they become. Surely more services is a better idea ?

Ruds how many village pubs are open all day as the post offices are? or are we approaching a time when PO services are only available at lunch time.

As a Transport Manager I spend the end of most months in our local office taxing vehicles, I would miss the chats

Dis from what I know if a PO is relocated to a pub as part of the contract the pub building has to be accessible to customers for normal business hours even if the pub is not open to serve drinks during the whole period

This is a mutually advantageous arrangement for rural communities because the owner of the pub gets rent from the Post Office for use of his or her premises and the Post Office can carry on business from which its customers all benefit rather than having to close down

Of course the owner of the pub in certain cases might choose to open for more hours if he or she believes that the throughput of PO customers might provide additional business for the pub so everyone wins in such a case

I fully accept that this system is only suitable for small rural communities and would not work in large towns of cities but at least it's a start and does help the geographical areas most at risk from PO closures
